Klabin’s biodiversity conservation initiatives in progress

On the International Biodiversity Day – celebrated on May 22 – the Company reiterates its commitments to maintaining the biological diversity of Brazilian fauna and flora

São Paulo, May 18, 2023 – As a forestry company, Klabin has biodiversity conservation as an important pillar that drives its operations oriented towards sustainable development. Currently, the Company has 718,000 hectares of forests, including 42% dedicated to the conservation and maintenance of biodiversity.

The company’s commitment to the agenda was announced through the Klabin Sustainable Development Goals (KODS), which guide the Klabin 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, aligned with the UN agenda – with five specific biodiversity conservation goals to be achieved in the next seven years.

The goals involve the recovery of degraded areas, nature conservation studies, reintroduction of extinct or endangered species and general care with the fauna.

Inside its forest area, Klabin maintains almost 9,000 hectares of Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPNs), which are permanent conservation units created in private areas in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, and the Klabin Ecological Park (PEK) located in Telêmaco Borba, Paraná. Spanning over 5,000 hectares, the Serra da Farofa Complex RPPN is home to the Canoas river watershed, which forms the region’s largest drainage basin and supplies water to 160,000 residents of Lages. The Company’s protection and preservation initiative identified 570 species of flora and around 360 animal species, including some endangered species, such as the red-spectacled amazon, southern tamandua, ocelot and cougar.

In Telêmaco Borba is the Company’s other RPPN - the Monte Alegre Farm. Spanning around 4,000 hectares, the region has received initiatives related to the conservation and maintenance of ecological corridors, and houses the Ombrófila Mista Forest, which is home to 171 species of flora, including seven endangered species.

This and other data is obtained through research conducted at the Klabin Ecological Park (PEK). Located at the Monte Alegre Farm, PEK is spread on an area of nearly 10,000 hectares, 91.6% of them native forests, and runs projects designed to preserve and rehabilitate wild animals and preserve species, including 13 endangered species in the state. Currently, PEK has 180 animals of 50 different species, which are in their natural habitat for reproduction and preservation. It also has a sustainable forest management structure that helps conserve the natural habitats of animals and plants, which enables endangered species that could not be returned to nature to continue reproducing and live a quality life.

At the Klabin Ecological Park, the Company and its strategic partners implemented a few projects to reintroduce species, one of which reintroduced into nature, jacutingas, a bird species endangered in many regions across Brazil. The initiative culminated in the release of 30 birds into the native forests of Telêmaco Borba. In another opportunity, the Park helped reintroduce tapirs in the state of Rio de Janeiro, when it sent a few animals to the Ecological Reserve of Guapiaçu, an RPPN, which later resulted in the birth of the first offspring of the species in the region, changing a scenario of extinction that spanned over a century in the state.

“Over its century-old history, Klabin has built a solid commitment to sustainability, which became one of the Company’s main business drivers. Environmental conservation is part of our responsibility towards the planet and society,” said Julio Nogueira, Sustainability and Environment manager at Klabin.

The Company’s performance and progress on each of the commitments can be monitored through Klabin’s ESG Panel.

Recognition for environmental protection

Klabin’s benchmark initiatives have been recognized at different forums, attesting to their positive results. In 2021, it became the first Brazilian company to receive FSC® Certifications for Biodiversity Conservation (ES1), Carbon Sequestration and Storage (ES2) and Watershed Services (ES3) for the ecosystem services implemented at the Nascentes Farm located inside the Serra da Farofa RPPN.
