What is packaging: learn more about the different types and functions

Have you ever thought that packaging is a key component of commercial activities of most businesses? It is responsible for ensuring the storage, delivery and even the durability of products we consume every day.

Actually, it’s more than that: packaging also carries the ideals and identities of brands, and communicates concepts. Due to these reasons and the growing wave of awareness about consumption and sustainability, packaging has been increasingly gaining attention in various sectors of the economy.

Many studies on packaging are currently conducted in areas such as graphic design and product design. In addition, packaging engineering has been advancing rapidly and creating increasingly more effective, resistant and sustainable solutions.

What is packaging?

Simply put, packaging refers to containers or envelopes used to store, protect and group units of diverse products.  It also facilitates the transportation and distribution of items, such as corrugated board boxes with slits on the sides to facilitate carrying.

Moreover, packaging also has an important function of conservation, increasing the useful life of products such as food and cosmetics. It also carries important information about the packaged content, such as nutritional facts, proportions, quantities, origin and the companies involved in the manufacturing and distribution of the product.

Good packaging not only protects and conserves the product, but may also exert strong influence on consumer perception and drive sales. After all, practical, attractive and well-designed packaging tends to create better consumption experiences.

The process of manufacturing packages must take into account the performance of materials in physical tests and how the packaging will be disposed of once it serves its purpose. Therefore, the use of raw materials that are more sustainable and from renewable sources, as well as investments in recycling, are very important factors in this market.

How to make packaging?

Paper packaging is the easiest to customize and is derived from renewable raw materials. Kraft paper packaging stands out due to the aesthetics of the material, which is reminiscent of handicraft processes and ensures greater proximity between the product and consumers than does plastic packaging with excessively industrialized appearance.

A good option is to buy rolls of kraft paper and use it to wrap products as wrapping paper, which enables the use of stamps, stickers and personalized printing to add elements of the brand to the packaging and customize it. Kraft paper bags can also be customized.

All this also applies to paperboard cartons and corrugated board packaging, which also score extra points for their strength and for being great options to wrap large or heavy products.

Main functions of packaging

When it comes to transportation and logistics, packaging is classified based on how it organizes the packed content.

Since it is so important for the production and distribution processes, packaging is used in several stages of the logistic chain, performing functions that end consumers are not always aware of. Some of these are:

Primary - Primary packaging is that which is in direct contact with the product. For example, in the case of toothpaste, the primary packaging is the tube that stores the paste.

Secondary - Usually, the primary packaging is inside a secondary packaging, which gives it extra protection while also serving as an ally in brand communication. In the toothpaste example, secondary packaging is the box in which the tube is stored.

Tertiary - Tertiary packaging is the one that contains various secondary packages, usually stacked to facilitate distribution. Corrugated boxes are often used as tertiary packaging.

Quaternary - Quaternary packaging has bigger compartments that are required to move large quantities of tertiary packaging.

Personalização de embalagens I Bloco de texto

Personalization of packaging

Personalization of packages is essential for brands that wish to stand out in a fiercely competitive market. In case of glass, plastic or metal packaging, engraving logos and other designs is a complex process and hence, labels or adhesives are usually the choice.

On the other hand, paper and cardboard packages facilitate the use of visual elements printed directly on the surface. In addition, stamps and even manual handwriting is possible on these materials, which enables brands to create highly personalized experiences for their customers.

If customization has to produce satisfactory results, it is necessary to choose high-resolution printers and papers that guarantee good print quality.
