The New Millennium. New Challenges.

Today

The economy enters the new millennium with prosperity and financial stabilization. Major investments are again turned to the public sector, especially  infrastructure. In Brazil, following the trends of world economic policies, the Economic Acceleration Plan - PAC is launched, with investments for economic growth in various industries, driving the GDP increase. At the end of the 00s, the beginning of 2010, the world economy is shaken, started by the American subprime crisis in 2007 and 2008. Still in Brazil, starting in 2010, already suffering from the derivatives crisis, we still have the political-economic instability, with unpopular measures regarding tax adjustments. Whistleblowing of corruption in the government and in some industries lead the economy to stagnation, with large companies accused of overbilling, forming cartels, and paying bribes to politicians.

Resuming the Expansion

1990 - 2000

The beginning of the 90s is characterized by an unstable, highly inflationary, and high interest economy, which forces companies to adopt new measures to maintain sales stable, selling either abroad or to the domestic market, according to the demand. The Brazilian economy resumed growth in 1993, after three years of stagnation. Despite the recovery, which started in the last quarter of 1992 with the definition of the presidential succession, there were still difficulties for the pulp and paper industry due to the excess supply in the market, increasing competition between producers and significantly affecting prices.

In 1994, the Real Plan was created, with the creation of a new currency unit. The objective was to stabilize the currency and end hyperinflation, increasing purchasing power and offering new perspectives to the various industries of the economy.

New Administrative Paths

1980 - 1990

The country was beginning to show what the 80s would be: high inflation and high foreign debt, factors that, in addition to the global recession, caused a sharp fall in market prices. Klabin maintained itself thanks to a flexible sales policy, alternating between the foreign market and the domestic market. Always maintaining the quality of its output, managing to export its products, even with an international market in crisis and recession, indicating a high level of competitiveness. Despite the difficulties, Klabin expands and diversifies production in the pulp and paper industries, by entering the multi-layered bags and soluble pulp market.

In Accelerated Growth

1960 - 1970

The paper industry anticipated incentives for the installation of newsprint mills, as the industry had low production of newsprint in the 60s, only supplying one third of the domestic market.

Within this political and incentives context, Klabin focused its investments in improving key areas of production by implementing new and modern mills, centralizing its operations in the paper, corrugated cardboard, and ceramics.

Opening new markets

1950 - 1960

The Goals Plan of the Juscelino Kubistchek administration (1955- 1960) was aimed at the growth of the public sector, by building roads, in the Federal District in the capital city of Brasilia and the continued installation of base industries, among other priorities.

The urbanization process and the pace of populational growth brought about profound changes in the consumer market. New products and new demands affected several industries, encouraging the start of new activities. Klabin already stood out among the main business groups in the country and launches itself to manufacture new products for the marketplace: corrugated cardboard, synthetic yarns, and promotional matches.

The Big Boom

1930 - 1940

The Getúlio Vargas administration (1932-1945) was marked by an economic policy aimed at helping the development of base industries, to meet market demand.

The paper and cardboard industry led the widespread growth of the industry of transformation. The problems caused by the difficulty to import newsprint and paper pulp, among others, are relieved with tax incentives for the implementation of paper mills.

During this period, Klabin Irmãos & Cia. (KIC) experienced its first major development boom. The Group has become one of the most important in the country, entering into a process of rapid expansion and diversification of its activities.

Origins of the Development

The history of the Klabin Group began in 1889, when Maurício Freeman Klabin arrived in Brazil. An immigrant from Lithuania, the young entrepreneur left his family in his homeland and landed in Santos (state of São Paulo). He settled in the capital of the state of São Paulo, which was already emerging as an important trade and financial center in the country. Maurício Klabin sold cigarettes to shops and hostels, importing paper and tobacco to manufacture the cigarettes. He got a job at a printing shop that he later bought: Empreza Graphica Klabin.

In 1890, Maurício F. Klabin established his own company, MF Klabin e Irmão, which operated as a printing shop and office supplies importer, in São Paulo. In 1899, with his brothers, Salomão and Hessel, and with their cousin Miguel Lafer, he founded Klabin Irmãos e Cia - KIC.
