To Klabin, environmental preservation is a priority and an integral part of the company’s management practices and the day-to-plant activities of its production facilities. And water, given its importance to the pulp and paper production process, had to be included in the company’s major environmental initiatives.

Each Klabin plant has its own targets for reducing water consumption, and the company works year after year to reduce its indicators even further. One example is the effort being made in the state of Santa Catarina that has become an international reference in the area. The Otacílio Costa Unit, which is located 223 km from Florianópolis, the state capital of Santa Catarina, reached the level of 28 m³ of water consumed for each ton of packaging paper produced, which represents a reduction of 54% from 2009.

To achieve this result, the company invested R$2 million. Klabin acquired equipment to implement a closed water cycle, administers regular training programs on the topic and implemented water cooling towers with capacity of 1,500 m³/h.
