Klabin introduces its Area of Conservation in Santa Catarina

Confirming its historical commitment to sustainable development, Klabin has introduced its first RPPNE (State) in Santa Catarina. With this the company, which has been present for over four decades in the State, will be conserving an area of 4,987 hectares. This initiative has received the support of Fatma (The Environmental Foundation of Santa Catarina State).

The RPPNE Complex of Serra da Farofa is divided into six big blocks located in the Santa Catarina municipalities of Painel, Urupema, Rio Rufino, Urubici and Bocaina do Sul and also contains the sources of the Caveiras and Canoas Rivers, which are of extreme importance to the region. The area will be used to conduct scientific research and will help to conserve significant remnants of the Atlantic Rainforest, comprised of Araucaria Forests and Highland Meadows. “For Klabin, preserving an area of this size and with such abundant biodiversity goes to show how much the company has committed itself to a management model, that combines environmental preservation and production of scientific knowledge with the performance of its businesses and the development of the regions where it operates”, states Jose Totti, Klabin’s Forestry Director.

This is the second RPPN maintained by Klabin. The first, located within the Monte Alegre Farm, in Telemaco Borba (PR), has 3,852 hectares and was created in 1998.
In addition to research and supply of the seeds from forest species to recuperate degraded areas, the RPPN serves as support to generate information for the company’s socioenvironmental programs, such as the Legal Woods Program and also the Caiubi Program, which has already held over 3.5 thousand training sessions with teachers from 771 schools and benefitted 240 thousand students.
