Klabin expands its operations in Northeast and consolidates its leadership position in Brazil’s corrugated board packaging segment
São Paulo, September 13, 2019 – Reinforcing its competitiveness and growth capacity, Klabin, Brazil’s leading producer and exporter of packaging paper and leader in the corrugated board and industrial bag packaging segments, announces the acquisition of an industrial plant in Horizonte, Ceará. The investment is part of the company’s plans to expand its corrugated board packaging production to meet the needs of the growing fruit industry in the country’s Northeast.
The industrial unit, located 35 km from the state capital of Fortaleza and 90 km from the Port of Pecém, has an area of 1 million square meters and 30,000 square meters of built-up area, as well as the infrastructure required to immediately launch operations and potentially expand. With initial investment of R$48 million, the unit should start operations within a few months with the possibility of equipment being transferred from other units of the company.
“Klabin has been operating in Northeast for over 40 years and always is closely monitoring the region’s growth, which is considered one of Brazil’s richest agribusiness regions. We see the potential of these states and are working to supply this market with the best packaging solutions,” said Cristiano Teixeira, Klabin CEO.
With a focus on operating efficiency gains and caring for people and the environment, Klabin is gradually expanding its development of renewable, recyclable and biodegradable products, as part of its goal to participate actively in the construction of a future based on sustainable consumption.
According to Douglas Dalmasi, Packaging director at Klabin, Brazil’s Northeast and North, regions of strategic importance to the company, are consolidating their global position as major fruit exporters. “We believe and invest in the region to strengthen our partnership with clients in all industries, offering custom solutions for each product type and the best services, while avoiding waste throughout the entire cycle to end consumers,” said the executive.
Brazil is the world’s third-largest fruit producer. In 2018, its domestic fruit production was 41 million tons, 848,000 tons of which were exported. The main products exported in terms of sales volume include melons, mangoes and lemons/limes, in that order. Most of the products are produced in the Northeast.
Like the other products developed by Klabin, corrugated board packaging is made from wood from planted forests certified by the company, in other words, from sustainable and renewable sources, while also being fully recyclable. Our packaging is certified by international bodies that assure the food is stored and transported safely and free of contamination. The packaging’s design also helps to reduce food waste with holes that provide optimal ventilation for conserving the produce.
