São Paulo, November 11, 2015 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest paper producer and exporter, participated for the second time in the Environmental Paper Company Index (EPCI), held every two years by WWF.The Company registered excellent performance in the survey, achieving a total score of 82%, up 7.5% from the overall score it obtained in the previous study published in 2013.The report evaluated the performance of 80 paper companies in countries across Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Africa in the following categories:newspapers, printing paper, tissue, pulp and packaging.

While evaluating the companies, WWF considered aspects such as the company’s influence on forest ecosystems, gas emissions and water pollution during the production process, and the environmental management system.Recognized as one of the largest global conservation organizations, WWF is present in 100 countries and has more than 5 million supporters.

“The pulp and paper sector has the unique potential to supply renewable materials that help do things as diverse as share knowledge, improve sanitation and keep food safe.However, this potential is diminished if poor logging practices degrade forests and deplete carbon stores, if plantations take land away from traditional communities, if pulp mills pollute air and water or if paper fit for recycling is burned.The Environmental Paper Company Index (EPCI) helps us assess if industry is making good on its promise of supplying essential products with reduced impact on nature,” said Rod Taylor, director of WWF’s Global Forest Program.

Klabin was recently recognized as the company with the best practice in Natural Capital Management by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Latin America.The company posted outstanding results in Natural Capital Management:100% certification of planted forests and the target to certify all suppliers in three years, 3% increase in water reuse;86.5% of renewable energy sources, 55.6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over the last 10 years and reduction of 94,000 tons per year in fuel oil consumption, preventing the emission of 290,000 tons of CO2 per year.
