Puma rescued from Klabin Ecological Park taken to zoo in Ceará

Rescued while still a cub and unable to be returned to the wild, the big cat was sent to a new home with a research program dedicated to its species

Paraná, June 25, 2020 – The Klabin Ecological Park (PEK), located in Telêmaco Borba, Paraná, successfully carried out the transportation of Bigode, a female puma that had been rescued from a fire in Bandeirantes, Paraná and taken to PEK while still a cub, to her new home, a zoo in Canindé, Ceará. Bigode was moved because, besides not being able to be reintroduced back into the wild and having received all the care required for her rehabilitation at PEK, her new home features a program dedicated to the study of her species.

This is not the first time that Klabin Ecological Park has organized a wildlife transportation operation like this one. In 2018, PEK sent three tapirs, one female (Flora) and two males (Valente and Jupiter), to the Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve in Rio de Janeiro to reintroduce the species in the state. All actions carried out by the Ecological Park foster biodiversity conservation that prioritizes rehabilitating wildlife and protecting endangered species, while conducting scientific research, promoting the reproduction and reintroduction of species in the wild, which can be achieved through partnerships like these.

“Every activity carried out at Klabin Ecological Park is designed to contribute to the well-being of all rescued species. We treat and care for the animals as best we can to enable, when possible, rehabilitation in their natural habitat or even their transportation to other sites better adapted to the particular species,” said Júlio Nogueira, Sustainability & Environment Manager at Klabin.

The big cat was transported by GOL Airlines, which took all the necessary precautions to spare the animal any trauma. The entire operation was monitored by a veterinarian from the park, and Bigode is already settled in her new home.

Safe Boarding:

GOLLOG, the logistics solutions unit of GOL Airlines, was responsible for flying the puma Bigode from the airport in Curitiba, Paraná to the airport in Fortaleza, Ceará. Through its specialized service GOLLOG Animals, the company is ready to fly many different species, both domestic and wild, which demands professionals with special expertise and specialized care in handling the animals and ensuring their comfort. The animals are transported in special crates that comply with civil aviation regulations to ensure their total safety. To further ensure the animal’s well-being, the company allowed Fábio Goes, the vet responsible for Bigode, to accompany her boarding, connection and ultimate deboarding on the airport apron, which were planned together with the Federal Police and the airport concessionaires.
