Klabin publishes 2021 Public Summary of Forestry Management Plan in Paraná
Sustainable forest management adopted by the company shows the importance of mosaic-format system in conserving local flora and fauna
Paraná, September 21, 2021 - Klabin has published the 2021 Public Summary of the Paraná Forestry Unit’s Management Plan, which brings the consolidated results for 2020. The unit manages a forest area spanning more than 421 thousand hectares, which include over 172,000 hectares of native vegetation earmarked for conservation. The document brings together the Company's social, environmental and sustainability policies, as well as the technical and economic indicators of its forestry operation, which highlight the importance of adequate management for conserving the biome in the region.
Klabin's forest area in Paraná represents the largest green patch in Southern Brazil. Studies conducted by the company's Forestry Unit identified 1,213 species of flora in the company's areas across the state, 39 of them endangered species; and 746 species of fauna, including 67 endangered species. Klabin pioneered the mosaic plantation technique, which intersperses planted forests with native forests to form ecological corridors that enable the coexistence and movement of native fauna in their natural habitat, besides contributing to the protection of soil and biodiversity. The number of species identified and detailed in the Public Summary makes Klabin's areas one of the most important regions in Paraná in terms of biodiversity.
The Public Summary also describes the diverse actions taken by Klabin among the communities where it operates in Paraná to reach out to - and engage with - the people by gaining knowledge of the region and raising environmental awareness. The company has implemented a total of 21 social and environmental projects, whose results are shown in the Public Summary, including the Caiubi Environmental Education Program, which disseminated content on ecological awareness to over 11,700 students in five towns across the Campos Gerais region.
Other highlights in the report include numbers from the Social Forests - Planning Sustainable Properties programs, which support family farmers and donated more than 28,000 native tree seedlings by the end of 2020, the 639 hectares of demarcated Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA) and Legal Reserves (LR), the Legal Forests program, through which more than 20.5 thousand native seedlings were donated for reforestation and environmental adjustment of rural properties and the demarcation of 514 hectares of Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA) and Legal Reserves (LR).
