The pioneer in undertaking a commitment to SBTi, the Company, which already has a positive carbon balance, has set a target of reducing its emissions by 25% by 2025 and 49% by 2035

 
São Paulo, May 27, 2021 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of papers for packaging and paper packaging, has its targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The initiative establishes the methods and tools for companies to set their targets for reducing emissions based on science. The Company’s commitment, disclosed today by SBTi, is to reduce GHG emissions (scopes 1 – own emissions and 2 – emissions from purchased energy) per ton of pulp, papers and packaging, by 25% by 2025 and 49% by 2035, compared to the baseline year of 2019.

 
The SBTi is a partnership between CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF to drive climate-related actions in the private sector through science. “The debate about climate change is urgent and requires practical actions that actually generate a positive impact on the planet. We seek a scientific basis for our target to reduce GHG emissions and want to share this experience with the market in order to take the discussion to the next level,” says Cristiano Teixeira, CEO of Klabin.
 

Due to its commitment to set targets for reducing emissions, Klabin is the only Brazilian company to be invited to the COP26 Business Leaders, a group responsible for disseminating and engaging the private sector on the issue of climate change, besides discussing the agenda of the 26th UN Conference of the Parties, which will be held this year. In 2019, the company joined the “Business Ambition for 1.5oC – Our only future” campaign led by UN agencies and SBTi and, more recently, the Race to Zero movement.
 

The global benchmark in sustainable development, Klabin already has a positive carbon balance since its forest areas capture and fix sufficient CO₂ to offset the emissions from its production process, providing a very important environmental service to combat climate change. Currently, the Company has 4.7 million tons of carbon equivalent in the annual net stock and around 90% of its energy matrix comes from renewable sources. The company also has a target of capturing a net amount of 45 million tons of CO₂eq from the atmosphere between 2020 and 2030 and purchase 100% of certified energy from renewable sources, which was formalized in the Klabin Sustainable Development Goals (KODS).
