Klabin joins Santa Catarina SDG National Movement for second consecutive year

Company was recognized with the 2021 Signatory Seal for initiatives to promote the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the state

Santa Catarina, May 25, 2021 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper, once again received the 2021 Signatory Seal from the Santa Catarina SDG National Movement. This is the second time it joins the list of companies committed to disseminating actions that support and help promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the state.

“Sustainable development is a guideline for Klabin’s operations, and being recognized by the Santa Catarina SDG National Movement shows that we are in the right path, rolling out initiatives that benefit the population of the state and help conserve nature. We will continue dedicating efforts to promote the SDGs in the regions where we operate and throughout our value chain,” said Julio Nogueira, Sustainability Manager at Klabin.

Among the projects listed that underline Klabin’s work in the region are its environmental conservation efforts. Through its Forest Certification Program, Klabin helps small suppliers to prepare themselves to obtain the forest certification, which adds value to products and brings benefits for more competitive and sustainable business deals across the entire chain. The process, conducted by a specialized consulting firm, is funded by Klabin and includes support with documentation and field training for external diligence by the certifying body. The initiative is aligned with three Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 8, about the right to decent work and economic growth; SDG 15, about life on land; and SDG 17, on partnerships and means of implementation.

The program has stimulated the expansion of certified areas in Santa Catarina. In early 2020, the group Produtores Serranos Certificados (PSC), which is participating in the action and consists of five members who manage 12 rural properties in Capão Alto, Correia Pinto, Lages, Painel, São Cristóvão do Sul and São José do Cerrito in the Serra Catarinense region became the pioneer in small and low intensity managed forests (SLIMF) in the state, for which it received one of the world’s most important forest certifications - the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) seal.

The seal will give rural producers the opportunity to operate in new markets with high demand for certified wood. Currently, FSC® certified areas supported by Klabin through the program exceed 23,000 hectares.

In another environmental conservation effort, Klabin has in recent years maintained the Caiubi Program which, aligned with SDG 4 (quality education), aims to raise environmental awareness among teachers and students in various schools in the Planalto Serrano region. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition was held online, thus ensuring the safety of participants in Lages and Correia Pinto. In 2021, the Company expanded the Caiubi program to other towns, also virtually, by launching the program website (https://caiubi.klabin.com.br). To date, 590 schools, 1,535 teachers and 205,617 students have benefited from the 33 stages of the initiative already concluded.

To help strengthen family farming, Klabin has the Social Forests - Planning Sustainable Properties program, which is being expanded to towns across Santa Catarina where Klabin has units. Through the program, which addresses SDG 2 (zero hunger and sustainable agriculture), small and midsized farmers receive support to produce and sell their crops in an environment friendly manner, which includes training, diversification of property and incentive to the formation of associations and cooperatives.

Through this program, Klabin has already been supporting producers in Otacílio Costa, who have a service to deliver the produce (feira delivery) during the physical distancing period, and plans to expand it to Correia Pinto and Lages to maximize the positive potential for the community.

The Santa Catarina SDG National Movement consists of volunteers and aims to help improve the quality of life of the people of Santa Catarina by promoting the commitments of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development approved by UN member nations.
