Paraná, May 24, 2019 – Next Saturday, from 9 a.m., residents of Jardim Bandeirantes neighborhood, in the city Telêmaco Borba, will receive at their homes returnable bags for separating and correctly discarding waste. The initiative is part of Klabin’s Solid Waste Program and also includes environmental education to clear up doubts and explain to each resident how the new form of waste collection will be done in the city. This methodology will start in this area of the city and will be gradually taken to the other neighborhoods.

Teams of volunteers from Klabin, the city government of Telêmaco Borba, the Environmental Cooperative of Telêmaco Borba, the Monte Alegre Scout Group, teachers of the Municipal Center of Child Education Cecília Meireles and students of the 4th and 5th year of the Municipal School Euclides Marcolla will visit the families, delivering an informational material together with the returnable packaging.

From next week, residents of Jardim Bandeirantes will keep recyclable solid waste in the bag supplied by the project, and on Thursday (30th), from 7 p.m., a recycling truck will go to every road. The material will be dumped in the truck and the bag returned to the resident. Recyclable waste will be collected every week, on the same day.

“The bag supplied is for separating recyclable dry waste from wet or non-recyclabe waste. This methodology is used in many cities in Brazil and provides a more efficient collection of waste, bringing benefits to the environment and the community”, said Henrique Luvison Gomes da Silva, Klabin’s Environment Sustainability Coordinator.

The returnable bags, made of tarpaulin that would be discarded, have a 200-liter capacity and are also sustainable. Recyclable material including plastic bottles, cans, newspapers and paper sheets can be put into the bag.

Klabin’s Solid Waste Program

Developed in partnership with the Caminhos do Tibagi Consortium, the program supports the management of solid waste in seven cities: Imbaú, Ortigueira, Reserva, Tamarana, Tibagi, Ventania and Telêmaco Borba. Klabin has worked to conduct diagnoses of solid waste in each city; supplied structures and equipment such as sheds, waste collection trucks and materials to structure the recycling process in each city; and worked to train collectors and to form associations or cooperatives for organizing the effort.

Upcoming steps in the program include obtaining the environmental licensing to make the Consortiumed Landfill a reality and providing environmental education on recycling in municipal schools.
