Klabin distributes more than 2,000 seedlings of native trees to municipalities in Santa Catarina
Santa Catarina, November 1, 2023 – Last month, Klabin donated seedlings of native trees to municipalities in Santa Catarina. As a forest-based company with a hundred-year history, the company strengthens its presence in the communities while also contributing to the forestation of the municipalities.
Among the seedlings donated were the Golden Trumpet Tree, Strawberry Guava, Guabiroba, Uvaia and Bracatinga, native to the region and which, besides making the towns more beautiful, also help the environment and the preservation of local biodiversity. Being fruit trees, these also attract wildlife. The fruits become food and animals disperse the seeds in the surroundings, creating a biodiversity cycle that is crucial for the health of the environment. The municipalities that benefitted from the initiative were São Joaquim, Bocaina do Sul, Otacílio Costa, Ponte Alta, Lages, Correia Pinto and Painel.
The distribution of seedlings was conducted in partnership with the municipal agricultural and environment department of São Joaquim; the municipal agricultural department and the agricultural research company (Epagri) of Ponte Alta; the municipal governments of Bocaina do Sul and Otacílio Costa, and Rede Massa in Lages. The initiative was also implemented in the following schools: EEB Francisco Manfroi, CEIM Girassol, EMEB Izidoro Marin and CPP do Centro de Educação Infantil Municipal do Bairro Caroba, in Lages; EBM Padre Theodoro Bauschulte, in Bocaina do Sul; CEI Braz Manoel, in Correia Pinto; and Escola de Educação Básica Santos, in Painel.
“Through these initiatives, Klabin underscores its commitment to sustainability as it encourages the planting of native species and promotes forestation in the regions where it operates. We also believe that establishing partnerships with the community, schools and public entities is an important step in disseminating the theme of environmental preservation in society. By doing it, we help improve climate quality, increase air humidity and bring greater climate comfort to the population. We believe that joint efforts further drive the results of these initiatives and it’s through such collaboration that we build a greener and more sustainable future for all”, said Júlio Nogueira, Sustainability and Environment Manager at Klabin.
In Bocaina do Sul, students at the Padre Theodoro Bauschulte municipal school received the Klabin at School Project: they watched a lecture about Klabin, as well as its forest and industrial operations, and learned how the Company takes care of the environment in its forests. In the end, the students received seed pencils. And in Lages, the environmental military police, together with the youth participating in the Environmental Protectors program, planted native seedlings donated by the Company. During the event, a discussion was held on the importance of preserving native vegetation in the Serra Catarinense region.
Klabin preserves 265,000 hectares of native forests in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, which represent 42% of its total areas. Trees play a pivotal role not only in preserving the ecosystems and life on the planet, but also in regulating the climate and combating climate change.
