Paraná, August 22, 2019 – The neighborhood of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro – BNH in Telêmaco Borba started selective waste collection this week. This was possible because reusable bags were distributed for sorting and disposing of recyclable materials during a campaign held on August 17.The action is part of Klabin’s Solid Waste Program, implemented in partnership with the Caminhos do Tibagi Intermunicipal Consortium.

 

Around 150 volunteers went door-to-door to distribute 800 bags, each with capacity of 200 liters. Henceforth, every Tuesday, starting from 7 a.m., a truck will drive around the neighborhood collecting recyclable materials. The bags of each household will be emptied and returned to residents. The system has already been functioning successfully at Jardim Bandeirantes, the first neighborhood where selective waste collection was implemented. BNH residents who were not at home during the distribution of bags may collect their bags at the Péricles Pacheco da Silva Municipal School.

 

The president of the Association of BNH Residents, Maria de Lourdes Mariano Joia, was impressed by the organization and success of the event. “Our neighborhood welcomed the program and we will certainly improve waste sorting,” she said. Celso Maciel de Almeida, a BNH resident, praised the instructions given by volunteers: “More than the distribution of bags, society lacks people who can explain how to better separate waste.”

 

The initiative of the Solid Waste Program also relied on the participation of 45 students, aged 8 to 10, studying at the 3^rd and 4^th grades of the Péricles Pacheco da Silva Municipal School. After studying the theoretical part of the program, they visited the environmental cooperative and, on Saturday, put into practice all that they learned, guided by the school’s pedagogical coordinator, Irandy Penha Cezar Carneiro. “It was a gratifying experience,” said Irandy.

 

For Henrique Luvison Gomes da Silva, Sustainability and Environment coordinator at Klabin, the success of selective the waste collection methodology will motivate its expansion to other neighborhoods of the city. “After the distribution of bags, the quality of recyclable materials received at the cooperative has improved: materials well sorted, dried and without any residues of organic waste, such as water and food,” he said.

 

Volunteers from Klabin, the municipal government, the Telêmaco Borba Environmental Cooperative, the Monte Alegre Scout Group and teachers and students from the Péricles Pacheco Municipal School and Presidente Vargas State High School participated in the action.

 

Klabin’s Solid Waste Program

 

Implemented in partnership with the Caminhos do Tibagi Intermunicipal Consortium, the program aids solid waste management in seven cities: Imbaú, Ortigueira, Reserva, Tamarana, Tibagi, Ventania and Telêmaco Borba.  Klabin focused on the diagnosis of solid waste in each city, supplied the structures and equipment such as sheds, waste collection trucks and materials to structure the recycling process in each city, and helped train collectors and form associations or cooperatives for organizing the efforts. The Program is also conducting the process of obtaining environmental license for the new Consortium Sanitary Landfill, besides promoting environmental education at municipal schools, with the focus on selective waste collection and recycling.
