Klabin launches pioneering monitoring action in Brazil to control forestry operations

Through data transmission via radio and satellite, the Control Tower will operate on a 24/7 basis and help in decision making, driving efficiency and productivity while reducing costs.

Paraná, June 22, 2021 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper, announces today the launch of its Forestry Control Tower, an online management tool that operates on a 24/7 basis and which will help the Company monitor its forestry operations, including harvest, wood loading and transportation, wood yards and supply to mills across Paraná. This new operating model will support the company’s decision-making process, driving efficiency and productivity while reducing costs as it will address operational deviations such as excessive unscheduled shutdowns, maintenance, shift changes and unavailability of equipment and trucks. The Tower will bring greater safety to the population as it improves the flow of trucks to avoid the formation of convoys, and monitors the speed and deviation of routes by vehicles.

Using artificial intelligence (AI), data transmission via radio and satellite, equipment telemetry and optimization tools, the system collates a large volume of information to meet the operational needs, such as equipment productivity, times and movements, providing the real-time status of field operations, which helps in formulating strategies.

The project is being implemented in two phases. The first, which consists of monitoring wood loading and transportation, wood yards and supply to mills, was concluded in April. The second phase will support wood harvest, which should be concluded by the end of June 2021. The Company will start monitoring silviculture when it gathers experience in the processes being implemented, thereby closing the cycle of forestry operations.

This is a pioneering initiative in the Forestry sector. Klabin is the first company in the sector to install 24/7 monitoring, which will help in its strategy of taking quick and precise decisions. “This will help the company to manage forestry activities in real time, execute its plans and integrate operational information to improve efficiency and productivity, while  reducing costs and strengthening its competitive position in the market,” says José Totti, Forestry Director at Klabin.

New technologies

The purpose of the Control Tower is to add value to the forestry business through streamlined processes combined with agile decision-making and the use of new technologies.  Klabin has been working on and developing, on a trial basis, the application of machine learning using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the dynamic truck dispatch base, which will potentially avoid truck queues and optimize resources based on the parameters and conditions at any given moment. Other applications, such as forecasting equipment breakdowns, can be considered soon.
