Klabin allocates over R$1 million to donations in Pernambuco

Pernambuco, May 21, 2020 – To strengthen the initiatives to fight COVID-19 in the state of Pernambuco, Klabin, Brazil’s largest paper and packaging producer and exporter, has allocated more than R$1 million for donations in the state. The initiatives are targeted at the health and welfare areas, including income generation for professionals affected by the crisis, giving priority to the city of Goiana, where the Company has operations.

The Company is responsible for acquiring all the equipment necessary to install 5 ICU beds and 35 infirmary beds, besides donating thousands of hospital and PPE items for opening a Field Hospital in Goiana. The hospital will exclusively treat patients infected with the coronavirus in the city. The Belarmino Correia Hospital received around 60,000 hygiene and PPE items, two air conditioners and 600 bottles of hand sanitizer. Also, 12,000 corrugated board packaging pieces were donated to partner companies and entities to transport food, hygiene and cleaning items and 100 special packaging to transport ventilator capsules to public hospitals in the metropolitan region of Recife.

Klabin donated 600 basic food baskets and 50 hygiene kits to social assistance entities and poor communities. The company has been closely monitoring the situation of collectors of recyclable materials, whose income declined due to the pandemic. In light of this, it has supported the Brazilian Association of Recyclable-Material Collectors (ANCAT) in distributing food voucher cards to workers throughout the state. They will also receive masks from the “Contagiando Sorrisos” Project in partnership with “Pimp My Carroça,” an NGO.

Klabin has already allocated R$10 million to initiatives fighting the coronavirus. Apart from direct donations, the company has struck important alliances, including with its clients, to expand the reach of its actions. Together with other major companies, it is part of the Brazilian Government consortium to manufacture 6,500 mechanical ventilators, which will increase significantly their availability in the country.

Safety

Klabin is part of the chain that supplies the population with essential items (food, hygiene, cleaning and hospital items). To ensure the safety of its thousands of employees and the maintenance of its operations, the Company implemented dozens of preventive actions, intensified the hygiene and cleaning protocols at all its units and facilities, set up crisis committees that daily seek the best practices in fighting COVID-19, and conducts programs to raise awareness among its professionals and families on the importance of prevention and basic care. Recently, the company installed ozone tunnels at the entry and exit points of its mills to disinfect external surfaces. The company has been operating an industrial unit in Goiana since 1973, in addition to 17 other units in Brazil and one in Argentina.
