Klabin promotes public procurement workshops for family farming in Santa Catarina

The event is an initiative of the Klabin Transforms - Social Forests program, in partnership with Sebrae, the Association for Preservation of the Environment and Life (Apremavi), Epagri and local municipalities

Santa Catarina, November 4, 2024 – Klabin held the 1st series of workshops in the Serra Catarinense region to discuss the challenges and opportunities of Public Procurement processes for Family Farming. This initiative was part of the Klabin Transforms – Social Forests Program, in partnership with Sebrae and the Association for the Preservation of the Environment and Life (Apremavi), supported by Epagri and local municipal governments.

The workshops brought together 100 representatives and were held in Otacílio Costa, with the presence of professionals from Palmeira, in Correia Pinto, with visitors from Ponte Alta, and in Lages. Mayors and deputy mayors were invited, as well as secretaries of administration, planning, agriculture, education and social assistance, legal representatives, nutritionists and cafeteria workers, leaders of cooperatives and family farming associations and representatives of Municipal School Food Councils.
The participants asked questions about the procurement processes for family farmers and received guidance on the National School Feeding Program (PNAE) and the Food Acquisition Program (PAA).

"Representatives from the municipalities listed their challenges and discussed opportunities for better communication and drafting of invitations to bid. At the event, we discussed the necessary efforts to promote family farming, quality of life and sustainability,” said Uilson Paiva, Social Responsibility and Community Relations manager at Klabin.

For Alisson de Jesus, chairman of the Association of Family Farmers from Lages (Agrilages), the workshop attracts the attention of the public and private sectors and other individuals in the development of family farming. "Events of this nature are extremely important for boosting interest in family farming in our region. The focus of this work highlights the potential for expanding programs, enhancing agricultural activities and improving food production, which is the ultimate goal, significantly benefiting the municipalities involved," he added.

Josie Moraes Mota, agricultural engineer at the Lages municipal government, believes that more workshops should be held over the next year. "The meeting is a significant occasion as it provides an opportunity to discuss the challenges encountered by both rural producers and the proponents of institutional programs. This discussion leads to reflection and the development of joint actions to improve the process both for the people who buy and for the people who sell," she clarified.
