Klabin Sowing Education contributes to the increase in the Basic Education Development Index (Ideb) in Santa Catarina
Otacílio Costa and Palmeira advanced in the results of the Basic Education Development Index when comparing 2021 and 2023
Santa Catarina, September 16, 2024 – Klabin's Sowing Education program, which trains elementary education managers and teachers from public schools, contributed to an increase in the Basic Education Development Index (Ideb), especially in two municipalities where it is implemented in Santa Catarina. Klabin Sowing Education operates in 20 towns across four Brazilian states, and 14 of these towns increased their scores in the Ideb 2023 compared to 2021. The results were confirmed in the presentation of the Ministry of Education and the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep) with the numbers from the Basic Education Assessment System (Saeb) 2023 and the Basic Education Development Index (Ideb) 2023.
The initiative trains managers and teachers of the public education system in school planning and management, covering everything from initiatives related to infrastructure and pedagogy to relationships with the school community in general. Teachers also receive support in the form of training and pedagogical materials for better teaching mathematics and Portuguese, subjects that are part of Prova Brasil, an exam which assesses students' performance and their learning throughout their entire educational trajectory, including skills from years prior to and following their current grade.
In Santa Catarina, Otacílio Costa and Palmeira exceeded the Ideb goal in 2023. Otacílio Costa increased from 6.3 to 6.6, exceeding the target of 6.3. Palmeira, on the other hand, rose from 6.3 to 7.2, exceeding the target of 6.6. In addition, both municipalities exceeded the state average (6.2 in the initial years) and the national average (6.0 in the initial years). For teacher Crislei Paim da Silva, from Palmeira, the program provided new perspectives on knowledge, reflection, active participation, and the improvement of pedagogical practice, enhancing the teaching and learning process. "For the third time, we obtained the highest index in the region and we are among the six best averages in Santa Catarina with a score of 7.2. This is a result of the commitment and qualification of all education professionals. Teachers are provided with continuous training that allows them to learn better ways to teach, support, and facilitate the development of students, resulting in better public education indexes," explains the teacher from the Núcleo Municipal Antonieta Farias de Souza.
The next Ideb assessment will be based on the year 2025 and educators expect to continue making progress, with more challenging targets. And Klabin Sowing Education assists in the ongoing training of managers and teachers. The training assists educators in developing the necessary skills to handle various situations in their daily practice, in addition to preparing students to deal with the challenges of a globalized market – a goal that requires equitable, inclusive, and quality public education. To achieve that, it proposes the development of competencies among educational and school administrators and social mobilization to support education, which should leverage improvements in student learning.
"These results endorse the effectiveness of the initiatives that Klabin has been implementing in partnership with the communities and the municipalities. The advancement in the Ideb of most of the cities participating in the Klabin Sowing Education program is a reflection of the commitment of all those involved in providing quality education and preparing the younger generations for a promising future. The Company will continue to work to expand this and reach more and more students," said Uilson Paiva, Social Responsibility and Community Relations manager at Klabin.
The program also operates in Paraná, Pernambuco, and São Paulo and relies on the consulting service of Interação Urbana, a company focused on technical support for public management, for training in school management and classroom content application practices.
About Klabin Sowing Education
Klabin's program began in 2017 with just three municipalities and today serves 20 cities in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, Pernambuco, and São Paulo. In 2023, the initiative encompassed 252 schools and almost 1,600 professionals in municipal schools (1,266 teachers and 292 managers), benefiting more than 32,000 elementary school students.
What is Ideb?
Created in 2007, Ideb is a tool that monitors the quality targets for basic education, with objectives to be achieved by each Brazilian state, the Federal District, and the municipalities, as well as projected results for each school. It is a tool that tracks quality targets for basic education. The Index varies from 0 to 10, so the better the performance of the students and the higher the number of students who pass, the higher the Ideb.
