Schools served by Klabin Sowing Education advance in the Basic Education Development Index (Ideb)

Training program for school managers and teachers from the municipal school system has been conducted since 2017

Paraná, September 16, 2024 – Klabin's Sowing Education program, which trains elementary education managers and teachers from public schools, contributed to an increase in the Basic Education Development Index (Ideb) in 11 of the 12 municipalities where it is implemented in Paraná. There was improvement in the cities of Congonhinhas, Curiúva, Doutor Ulysses, Imbaú, Ortigueira, Reserva, Rio Negro, Sapopema, Telêmaco Borba, Tibagi, and Ventania. The municipality of Rio Branco do Ivaí maintained the average in relation to the previous survey, carried out in 2021.

The initiative trains managers and teachers of the public education system in school planning and management, covering everything from initiatives related to infrastructure and pedagogy to relationships with the school community in general. Teachers also receive support in the form of training and pedagogical materials for better teaching of mathematics and Portuguese, subjects that are part of Prova Brasil, which assesses students' performance and evaluates their learning throughout their entire educational trajectory, including skills from years prior to and following their current grade.

The program is also developed by Klabin in Santa Catarina, Pernambuco, and São Paulo. In Paraná, Imbaú, Ortigueira, and Telêmaco Borba were the first municipalities to receive the program. Since then, the growth has been significant in each of the three cities. See table below.

In Ortigueira, the State Forestry and Agricultural Center, a pioneering project by Klabin in partnership with the government of the State of Paraná, recorded a score of 5.3, the highest among the 50 schools in the Regional Center of Education of Telêmaco Borba. The only technical school in Latin America specializing in mechanics and forest machine operations was also above the Paraná average, with 4.7, and the country's average (4.3). The Technical School received consulting from the Klabin Sowing Education program in the years leading up to the last measurement, in 2021 and 2022.

"With Klabin's program, teachers are better prepared to deal with the challenges of teaching, adopting innovative methodologies that make classes more dynamic and attractive to students." This change in the pedagogical approach resulted in an increase in student motivation and contributed to the overall performance of our school," says Ana Paula Borges Soares, principal of the Barão do Rio Branco school, in Imbaú.

"These results reinforce the effectiveness of the initiatives that Klabin has been implementing in partnership with the communities and the municipalities. The advancement in education in most of the cities participating in the Klabin Sowing Education program is a reflection of the commitment of all those involved in providing quality education and preparing the younger generations for a promising future," said Uilson Paiva, Social Responsibility and Community Relations manager at Klabin.

What is Ideb?
Created in 2007, Ideb is a tool that monitors the quality targets for basic education, with objectives to be achieved by each Brazilian state, the Federal District, and the municipalities, as well as projected results for each school. It is a tool that tracks quality targets for basic education. The Index varies from 0 to 10, so the better the performance of the students and the higher the number of students who pass, the higher the Ideb.
