The Company was the winner in the Water Conservation category

Santa Catarina, June 10, 2024 – Klabin, Brazil's largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable solutions in paper packaging, was the winner in the 30th edition of the Ecology Expression Award, with the project “The positive visibility of ecosystem services and the benefits provided by the environment to the planet,” in the Water Conservation category. The awards are aimed at publicizing and disseminating the efforts of companies and institutions on the sustainability and environment fronts, besides contributing to the conservation of natural resources and the development of environmental awareness.

The project presented by Klabin demonstrates the conservation potential of Fazenda das Nascentes, in the Serra da Farofa Complex Natural Heritage Private Reserve (RPPN), and highlights the magnitude of the environmental services provided in Santa Catarina State by the company. For this, Klabin sought recognition of the positive impacts observed in three ecosystem services and, as a result, became, in 2021, the first company in Brazil to simultaneously achieve the Statement for three of these services: Biodiversity, Conservation of Watersheds, and Carbon Capture and Storage.

The implementation of the Ecosystem Services Statement in Brazil by FSC® was launched in 2018 and aims to encourage the conservation of native forests by organizations that hold the forest stewardship certificate. The benefit of obtaining this statement includes using this tool to measure, verify, and communicate positive actions achieved through the implementation of sustainable management policies, as well as giving visibility and credibility to the company. In this context, Klabin was the first Brazilian company to obtain simultaneous recognition of positive impacts verified from three ecosystem services.

The Ecology Expression Award were created by Editora Expressão in 1993, one year after the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, known as Eco 92. The initiative promotes the environmental actions of companies in Brazil’s South and encourages other companies to follow the same path. The 30th edition of the Award featured the participation of 121 environmental projects registered from the states of São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul.
