Klabin distributes 500 native seedlings to the local community in Lages, Santa Catarina

The initiative is part of the International Day of Family Farming's celebrations

Santa Catarina, August 6, 2024 - Klabin distributed 500 seedlings of native trees with its employees to the local community of Lages, state of Santa Catarina. The initiative occurred during the second edition of the Family Farming Fair, organized by the Association of Municipalities of the Serra Catarinense region (Amures), Epagri, and the Lages Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, in celebration of the International Day of Family Farming, observed on July 25.

The donated species were Pitanga Cherry, Cattley Guava, Cherry of the Rio Grande, and Guabiroba, all native to the region and contributing to the preservation of local biodiversity. The donation of seedlings is part of the Social Forests program, carried out by Klabin in partnership with the Association for Preservation of the Environment and Life (Apremavi) and Small Company Support Service (Sebrae). The program was implemented in Santa Catarina in 2020 to support family farmers in the municipalities and communities neighboring Klabin's operations in the state. It fosters economic, social, and environmental opportunities through various initiatives aimed at strengthening family farming, contributing to the retention of rural populations and the sustainable development of the production and consumption chain. As a forest-based company with a hundred-year history, the company strengthens its presence in the communities while also contributing to the forestation of the municipalities.

Klabin has been present in Santa Catarina for over 50 years, with the municipality of Lages as a hub for social and economic development. With a forest area spanning approximately 151,000 hectares, the planted and native forests extend into the neighboring state of Rio Grande do Sul, covering a total of 44 municipalities in Santa Catarina and 11 in Rio Grande do Sul. Considering only native forests, the company maintains nearly 72,0000 hectares in this region.
