Document explains the Company’s good forestry management initiatives and its social and sustainability policies

Paraná, August 11, 2023 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable solutions in paper packaging, has published the 2023 Public Summary of its Forestry Management Plan in Paraná. The unit has the Company’s largest forest area that spans over 487,000 hectares, which include more than 203,000 hectares of native vegetation earmarked for conservation.

Distributed among 84 municipalities across the Campos Gerais region, the forestry area in Paraná is one of the largest green areas in Southern Brazil. Studies by a specialized consulting firm had identified 2,021 species of flora in the region until 2022, including 364 endangered species. Moreover, 724 species of fauna identified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as facing some degree of threat were also identified. Many of these species are in the Official List of Brazilian Endangered Species.

“Klabin has always stood out in adopting sustainable practices aimed at preserving biodiversity, protecting water resources and reducing the environmental impacts in one of the most important regions in the State of Paraná. The company conducts its forest management activities in a planned manner, always seeking to conserve local ecosystems”, explained Julio Nogueira, Sustainability and Environment Manager at Klabin.

Social and environmental responsibility
The Public Summary also describes the diverse actions taken by Klabin at the communities where it operates and where it actively participates in actions aimed at disseminating knowledge about the region, as well as educational and environmental awareness actions. “On the social front, Klabin follows the principle of dialogue and partnership with society. It seeks to establish relationships of trust and collaboration, while fostering grassroots development and valuing the culture and traditions of the communities”, said Nogueira.

Klabin invests in social projects, such as education, professional training and income generation programs to promote social inclusion and improve the quality of life of people. The result of all this is evident from the increase in the percentage of acceptance by communities, which reached 84.5% in Paraná in 2022.

Among the highlights is the Sowing Education Program, which, in 2022, supported the municipalities in Paraná in improving their Basic Education Development Index (Ideb), which measures students’ knowledge of Portuguese and Mathematics, according to the pass rate. Telêmaco Borba, Ortigueira and Imbaú, the three municipalities in Paraná that have been participating in the program since its creation, raised, in 2015, their Ideb scores by 41%, 13% and 16%, respectively, with Telêmaco Borba and Ortigueira remaining above the average projected by Ideb. In 2022, the Klabin Sowing Education Program was expanded to two more municipalities in Paraná: Congonhinhas and Rio Negro.
