Klabin receives two certifications from the Santa Catarina SDG National Movement

Company was recognized with Signatory Seals for its efforts and alignment with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the state

Santa Catarina, July 17, 2023 – Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable solutions in paper packaging, Klabin was recognized for the third straight time by the Santa Catarina SDG National Movement for its work based on best practices and actions aimed at sustainability, conservation of biomes and local communities. This time, the company received two seals: one for meeting the 2022 targets and one in celebration of four years of the company’s joining the Movement (2019).

Klabin, which completed 124 years in April, has been operating in Santa Catarina for over 60 years. The company is recognized worldwide for its sustainability actions and, as a forestry company, has a historical commitment to the conservation of native forests, having pioneered the adoption of mosaic forest management, a technique that planted forests of different ages interspersed with preserved native forests. This methodology helps form ecological corridors, which connect the company’s Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs) with fragments of native forests inside its properties, thus contributing to the biodiversity and protection of water resources, since a few preserved areas harbor watersheds that supply the Canoas and Caveiras rivers, which are important water sources in the Planalto Serrano region.

The company also runs various social initiatives in the region, encouraging sustainability on diverse fronts. One good example is the Wood Supplier Certification Program, by which the company helps small suppliers to prepare themselves to obtain the forest certification, which adds value to products and brings benefits for more competitive and sustainable business deals across the entire chain. Note that the initiative is aligned with SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 15 (life on land), and SDG 17 (partnerships and means of implementation).

On another work front, Klabin strives to boost income generation and family farming through the Social Forests - Planning Sustainable Properties program, which supports small and midsized producers through training, diversification of property and encouragement to forming associations and cooperatives. To stimulate environmental education and help form more conscientious citizens, since 2001 Klabin has been running in Santa Catarina, the Klabin Caiubi program, which disseminates general knowledge on environmental preservation among teachers and students of public schools. The initiative is aligned with SDG 4 (quality education).

“In 2016, Klabin became a signatory to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and, since then, we have been working on this agenda both internally, in our processes and products, and externally, by disseminating the importance of everyone’s engagement to ensure meaningful progress. The partnership with the Santa Catarina SDG National Movement is very important for us, as it underlines our commitment to the agenda and, especially, to the state and the people of Santa Catarina, where a significant portion of our operations is located,” said Felipe Broilo, Industrial Environmental Responsibility coordinator at Klabin.

Note that, in 2020, Klabin launched its own set of commitments called the Klabin Sustainable Development Goals (KODS). Organized around 4 main pillars and 23 material topics, which are broken down into specific targets, the KODS are aligned with the UN SDGs and focus on environmental, social and governance needs that are essential for the company and for the urgent global issues facing society and the planet. The initiatives include specific actions on the use of Energy and Water, Carbon Management, Wood Availability, Waste Management, Local Development and Impacts on Communities, among others. The progress of these actions can be tracked at Klabin’s ESG Dashboard.
