On World Water Day, Klabin endorses commitment to sustainable management and celebrates its progress in its targets

Reducing specific water consumption and increasing water safety in the regions where Klabin operates are some of the commitments in the Klabin 2030 Agenda that saw progress last year

São Paulo, March 21, 2023 – In line with the environmental targets set in its 2030 Agenda, Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of papers for packaging and sustainable solutions for paper packaging, reinforces its commitment to implementing actions designed to protect and restore water resources. Conscientious use of water is a strategic theme for the company, which, given its importance and complexity, requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach involving the entire production chain. The initiatives include projects aimed at reducing water consumption and reusing water, especially in its industrial operations spread across 10 Brazilian states. Last year, the Company reduced specific water consumption (consumptive use) at its mills by 17.8%, with 2018 as the reference year. The target, which is part of Klabin’s Sustainable Development Goals (KODS), is to reduce such consumption by 20% by 2030.

One of Klabin’s flagship actions is Hydrosolidarity Management, which focuses on the best forest management practices to eliminate or minimize the environmental impacts on microbasins. Also included in KODS is the Company’s continued commitment to bring forest harvest operations under its own hydrosolidarity management by the end of this decade, which increased from 79.7% in 2020 to 97.3% in 2022. The company is also committed to ensuring territorial water safety in 100% of the regions where it operates by 2030, having achieved 74% of the target last year.

“At Klabin, we always invest in innovation, research and technologies that help us to preserve a resource that is essential not only for our business but for life on our planet - water. The numbers of 2022 indicate the progress made in achieving our internal targets in the Klabin 2030 Agenda, and motivate us to continue implementing strategies that generate even better results,” said Francisco Razzolini, director of Industrial Technology, Innovation, Sustainability and Projects at Klabin
A global reference in sustainability, Klabin has rolled out various actions across its industrial operations to treat 100% of its wastewater. The company is also part of hydrographic committees in the regions where it operates, especially in Paraná and Santa Catarina, whose mission is to improve the production and forestry processes for the conscientious use of water. It has also been gradually increasing its participation in Regional Development Forums, taking water safety as an environmental education subject to municipal schools.

“On World Water Day, we emphasize the importance of broadening discussions on efficient management and preservation of natural resources for the conservation of ecosystems,” he added.
