Klabin Port Terminal (PAR-01) goes operational in Paranaguá

With capacity to handle one million tons of pulp a year, the new terminal located at the Port of Paranaguá brings a huge logistics structure to the region where the Company has been investing in recent years

Paraná, December 16, 2022 – Klabin, the largest producer and exporter of paper for packaging and sustainable solutions in paper packaging, started operations at the Klabin Port Terminal PAR-01 on December 16. With the construction of a new railroad access, the Terminal, which is located within the port area, marks the resumption of operations with wagons at the Port’s commercial quay in the region.

The Terminal is an important part of the Company’s growth strategy to consolidate Paranaguá as its flagship port to ensure sustainability in the company’s exports for future investments. PAR-01 enables the entire unloading operation of hardwood pulp, softwood pulp and paper and fluff reels coming from the Puma and Monte Alegre Units to be done inside the Port of Paranaguá.

The operation will embark pulp bales and rolls produced at the Ortigueira and Monte Alegre mills. Up to 1 million tons are estimated to be transported a year. PAR-01 also makes Klabin more productive and competitive in break bulk cargo, a type of cargo transportation that dispenses with containers by placing large volumes directly inside ships, which enables us to serve our clients on a large scale and with operational excellence. The first ship with cargo from the terminal leaves in December for Livorno in Italy, an important region where Klabin’s products have a strong presence.

The benefits of PAR-01, however, go beyond Klabin’s operations. The location of the new terminal, with a direct railroad connection from the Ortigueira mill to PAR-01, will reduce truck traffic to fewer than 1,200 trips on shipping days, to transport Klabin’s cargo to its external warehouse located 5km from the port area. As such, the terminal should benefit traffic conditions in the city, increasing the safety of citizens and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

PAR-01 covers an area of 27,530 m2 leased by Klabin at an auction held in August 2019. The concession agreement was signed in early 2020, ending two decades without new leases at the Port of Paranaguá. Though the terminal is ready for operations, there are still investments to be concluded, such as the installation of solar panels, which will generate approximately 270 megawatts/hour a year, making power generation by PAR-01 more sustainable.

Footbridge

In addition to the PAR-01 startup, in December a footbridge will be inaugurated at the Avenida Portuária in Paranaguá. The footbridge was constructed to ensure the safety of professionals commuting to the port. Its construction and model had been widely discussed in meetings held with all port worker unions and APPA, the Administration of the Ports of Paranaguá and Antonina. The construction of the footbridge was one of the actions prioritized and approved in the Neighborhood Impact Study (EIV) for building the PAR-01/Port Terminal.
