Klabin develops the first simulator (cabin) for operation and maintenance of forestry machines in Brazil

Located at the Company’s Training Center in Telêmaco Borba, Paraná, the equipment uses augmented reality to simulate real world problems in forest machinery, training employees and mechanics in the field

Paraná, December 1, 2022 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of paper for packaging and sustainable solutions in paper packaging, where innovation is present in all areas of operation as an important driver of business evolution, has created Brazil’s first forestry simulator. The technology, developed by the Company’s Training Center in Telêmaco Borba, Paraná, aims to make the company a benchmark in maintenance in the sector and provide more effective training to the future operators and mechanics of Klabin’s forest machinery, thereby increasing security and reducing operating costs.

The simulator reproduces the functioning of the field machines in a controlled environment, with a cabin that makes movements according to the machine’s decision and virtual reality glasses that simulate the forest environment. As such, future machinery operators and mechanics who are undergoing training can better understand how to operate each equipment safely before actually working with the machines. Moreover, with this innovation, it is possible to portray as realistically as possible the problems and defects that may arise in the operation, such as heavy rains and bee attacks, as well as maintenance issues, such as engine heating and fire outbreaks, encourage the professional to learn how to best deal with such incidents.

The Training Center also has field machines capable of simulating problems involving hydraulic issues, hose squeezing, air-conditioning system and chain sharpening, in addition to practicing the replacement of components and operation of the machines’ transmission and drainage system. With better trained employees, their security and the useful life of machinery increase, while operating cost decreases.

The simulator complements the company’s Training Center, which encompasses all the phases of the maintenance learning process, including both theory and practice. More than R$1 million was invested in building the space.

“Innovation is part of Klabin’s DNA and that’s why the company is increasingly investing in research and actions that bring benefits to the Company and its employees.  The forest simulator and Training Center once again demonstrate Klabin’s pioneering efforts in technology and are examples of how the company uses digital transformation to drive its development and that of its professionals”, said Darlon Orlamunder de Souza, Forestry Operations Director at Klabin.
