Environmental Protectors Program visits Serra da Farofa Complex Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN)

Lages, October 28, 2022 – Last week, Klabin received 41 students from the municipalities of Lages and Cerro Negro, Santa Catarina, to visit the Serra da Farofa Complex RPPN and the Nature Interpretation Center (CINAT), both maintained by it in the Planalto region in Santa Catarina. The action is part of the Environmental Protectors Program, an initiative of the Environmental Military Police in partnership with the Education Department, which has received support from Klabin since 2005.

During the visit, students explored a part of the Atlantic Forest biome, especially at the Serra da Farofa Complex RPPN, with its araucaria forests and high altitude fields. They also visited the facilities of CINAT, located at the Conservation Unit in Serra da Farofa Complex RPPN, a sustainable building that receives specialists, researchers and students from all over Brazil who study the region's flora and fauna.

Mireli Moura Pitz Floriani, sustainability consultant at Klabin, Bruna Salami, and sustainability engineer at Klabin, accompanied the students during the visit, which was designed to improve the students' knowledge of vegetation in the Serra Catarinense region and the importance of RPPNs in conserving biodiversity, as well as the ecosystem services managed by these conservation areas.

The visit included fun activities involving students and a lecture by Sumatra Inteligência Ambiental explaining the diverse important issues for students' education, such as the monitoring of biodiversity in the areas of the Company, the importance of conservation units and the three ecosystem services certified at RPPN, explaining each of them - water, carbon and biodiversity.

Students also walked a trail that leads to one of the watersheds of the Caveiras River, where they learned about the quality of water in the region, the importance of Caveiras River and of the conservation of its watershed, and how Klabin's actions at the RPPN are important for the whole region.

The Environmental Protectors Program was born with the mission of training elementary school students in Lages and the region on themes related to caring for the environment, turning them multipliers of knowledge in their communities. The initiative provides theoretical and practical training and addresses the scenario of nature conservation, environmental legislation, aspects of local fauna and flora, civility, morality and ethics. The action has already benefited more than 500 children aged between 11 and 14 in diverse cities across the state where the company operates.

About the Serra da Farofa Complex RPPN

A Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) is a type of conservation unit created by the will of the landowner. When a landowner decides to create an RPPN, they undertake a commitment to conserve nature.

The Serra da Farofa Complex is Klabin's biggest RPPN and the third largest in Southern Brazil, according to the National RPPN Confederation. Spanning an area of over 5,000 hectares of remnants of the Atlantic Forest, the region has the watersheds of the Caveiras and Canoas rivers. More than 570 species of flora and 360 species of fauna have been officially identified in the region, including many classified as endemic, rare and included in official endangered species lists.

In 2019, the Nature Interpretation Center (CINAT) was inaugurated. It is a sustainable building for researchers and students, which facilitates their stay in the premises for more in-depth studies.
