Klabin conducts maintenance shutdown at Otacílio Costa Unit
From October 10-20, the shutdown should attract some 1,500 workers to the city and boost the local economy
Santa Catarina, October 6, 2022 – On October 10 to 20, Klabin will shut down its Otacílio Costa Unit for maintenance operations on all pieces of equipment to ensure the reliability of machinery and employee safety and to implement improvements to increase the quality of the production process. Established in Regulatory Standard 13 (NR-13), the Maintenance Shutdown is a legal procedure that must be conducted by companies working with pressure vessel equipment in their manufacturing units, such as boilers and digesters. The Company reaffirms that all safety and environmental standards are being adopted during the maintenance and startup activities.
Maintenance shutdowns require a long period of planning to guarantee that all maintenance steps, including adjustments, repairs and inspections, are conducted rapidly and efficiently.
The period demands special attention to the logistics of this major operation and, this year, will require the hiring of 1,500 temporary workers to ensure that the actions are carried out according to plan. A significant number of these workers come from nearby cities, which helps to generate income for this mountainous region of Santa Catarina state. In addition, the hiring of new workers should boost the local economy and be felt by residents, with more people patronizing local hotels, transportation, restaurants and businesses. All temporary workers will be required to present proof of COVID vaccination (three doses).
Reinforcing its commitment to transparency, one of Klabin’s main concerns during this period is to keep the community engaged and informed on the maintenance shutdown so that everyone feels safe about movements in the city and ready for the potential opportunities associated with these temporary workers.
During this period, the company informs that people living near the unit could perceive variations in odors and noises typical to maintenance processes. However, please note that these changes do not pose any threat to public health or to the environment.
