Klabin launches Public Summary 2022 for Santa Catarina Forestry Management Plan

The publication highlights Klabin’s unprecedented achievement in Brazil of simultaneously receiving three certifications for ecosystem services from FSC®

Santa Catarina, July 25, 2022 - The Public Summary 2022 of Klabin’s Forest Management Plan in Santa Catarina is available for consultation. The document compiles the company’s social, environmental and sustainability policies, which are technical and economic indicators of its forestry operations, as well as the actions carried out with local communities. The full version of the document is available on the Klabin website.

The Public Summary 2022 features the achievement of FSC® Certifications by Klabin, in November 2021, in Ecosystem Services for Biodiversity Conservation, Carbon Sequestration and Storage, and Watershed Services, at Nascentes Farm, located in the State Natural Heritage Private Reserve (RPPN) of Serra da Farofa Complex. With this recognition, Klabin becomes the first company in Brazil to obtain simultaneously the three seals. The three certifications of the FSC® for ecosystem services are aligned with Klabin’s Sustainable Development Goals (KODS) and reinforces its commitment to adopting best social, environmental and economic practices in its planted forests.

The indicators presented in the summary include the results of activities developed by the fauna and flora monitoring teams, which identified 880 native plants in the forests maintained by Klabin in the state, 90 of which are endangered. The survey of wildlife mapped 528 species, 49 of which also are on the official endangered species lists. The biodiversity mapping enabled the identification of rare and endemic species, such as the amphibian Vitreorana uranoscopa (perereca-de-vidro, its popular name in Brazil) found at the Farrapos Farm, which is located in the municipality of Urubici, and is part of the Serra da Farofa Complex State RPPN.

The good levels of wildlife observations in the forests maintained by Klabin could be associated with the adoption of mosaic planting, a technique that Klabin pioneered in Brazil that intersperses planted eucalyptus stands with tracts of native forests to form ecological corridors that enable the coexistence and movement of native fauna and flora in their natural habitat, while contributing to soil and biodiversity conservation.

Relations with communities

The Public Summary 2022 also lists the social and environmental actions and projects implemented jointly with local communities, such as the Klabin Caiubi Program, to raise ecological awareness among teachers and students in public schools in the Planalto Serrano region. The 34th edition of the action, held in 2021, was carried out online in the cities of Lages, Otacílio Costa, Monte Carlo and Petrolândia. By the end of 2022, other cities where the Company operates will be included in the program. To date, Caiubi has benefitted 652 schools, 1,656 teachers, and 223,640 students in the phases carried out in Santa Catarina state.

The document explains the functioning of Klabin’s 11 other programs for engaging with local communities, such as Araucária Trail, Environmental Protectors and the Forest Certification for Beekeepers Program, which in August 2021 received Imaflora certification. The certifying agency identifies organizations and producers that work with raw materials obtained from forests that are handled sustainably and conserve natural forests.
