Paranaguá community approves Klabin’s initiatives for the Feast of Our Lady of Rocio
Company submitted a report on the port terminal’s impacts on the intangible heritage of the feast, which is in the process of being registered at Iphan
Paraná, June 10 2022 – On June 8, Klabin held an expanded meeting with regional leaders, devotees and caiçara (coastal) communities that have a direct relation with the Feast of Our Lady of Rocio. The purpose was to present the findings of the study on the cultural and religious event, as well as actions proposed to mitigate possible impacts on the feast by the construction of Klabin’s Port Terminal, PAR-01.
All the proposals were approved by the persons and institutions responsible for organizing the Feast of Our Lady of Rocio who attended the meeting and are recorded in the Report on the Assessment of Impacts on Intangible Heritage (Raipi), to be submitted to Iphan, Brazil’s heritage preservation authority, as a condition to obtain the environmental license for the Port Terminal.
The measures cover urban, heritage, devotional, socio-environmental, cultural and educational spheres. The actions proposed and validated by the participants at the meeting include studies for the urban planning and renovation of the Praça do Santuário square and the pier, as well as an inventory of regional religions feast and a book, currently in progress, to record the intangible heritage of the Feast of Our Lady of Rocio. They also approved the proposals to support the celebration of a Caiçara Mass, and to conduct educational, cultural and environmental initiatives, and to encourage Caiçara lutherie practices to produce musical instruments. There will also be actions to train institutions to prepare and manage social and cultural projects, which will enable diverse initiatives in the region to obtain access to funds from Klabin and through public and private fundraising efforts.
“The presentation and validation of the actions suggested are an essential step towards obtaining the license for our terminal and another practical evidence of our relationship of transparency and trust with the local community, especially the devotees, caiçara people and other stakeholder groups involved in such an important event as the Feast of Our Lady of Rocio,” says Sandro Ávila, director of Planning and Logistics Operations at Klabin.
