SENAI CETIQT, Fiocruz and Klabin develop antiviral packaging

Solution created with 100% organic components also proved effective against the human
coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)

São Paulo, March 04, 2022- The Chemical & Textile Industry Technology Center (SENAI CETIQT) has been assembling
partners in combatting the spread of the virus, and one is Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer of
packaging paper and corrugated board and sack kraft packaging, which has developed a special
coating with antiviral characteristics made from components that are organic and free of
metals. Another partner of the project is Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz, which conducts analyses to
verify the antiviral activity of textiles or the formulations applied to them. The research is
conducted by the SENAI Innovation Institute for Biosynthetics and Fibers (ISI), which is part of
SENAI CETIQT.

The project works on developing a coating applied on kraft paper with applications mainly in e-
commerce packaging with antiviral properties and already has efficacy studies and tests
conducted by Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz, one of Brazil’s most respected organizations in this
field. The tests show that the new packaging is able to deactivate the virus with proven
efficacy of over 99% within one minute of coming into contact with the novel coronavirus
(SARS-CoV-2). Other strains also could be tested in the study.

“The Institute has a partnership with Klabin that is the fruit of the good relations it has built
over the years in other projects, such as for developing hand sanitizers. Since the Institute is
accredited by Embrapii, Klabin came to us with the challenge of developing a pulp packaging
solution for e-commerce. With the rising number of cases around the world and people’s need
for isolation, the demand for this kind of service has grown significantly. To check the spread
of the human Sars-CoV-2 virus in the country, we set out to develop an outside-the-box
solution based on a technology that includes no metals whatsoever and is 100% organic and
environmentally friendly,” said José Carlos Dutra Filho, a consultant of the Fibers platform of
the SENAI Innovation Institute for Biosynthetics and Fibers. According to the researcher, “the
Fibers Innovation team is fully equipped for developing projects on a prototype scale and to
work with both conventional and advanced processes in the country’s industrial sector. The
Institute is available for research, development and innovation in fibers and related processes
for general applications.”

According to Klabin, the solution will focus primarily on e-commerce, given how intensively
packages are handled until delivered to end consumers. The proposition is to maintain the
packaging’s strength and protect the product being shipped while preventing contamination.
The organic active ingredient maintains the recyclability of the packaging, which is made from
Klabin’s planted and certified forests, which significantly reduces waste generation and
contributes to the circular economy.

“Klabin aspires to be a reference in responsible solutions that meet the constant
transformations in the world, and innovation is key to driving advances in our business. The
company’s sustainable development is directly connected to how it cares for people and the
environment. We are very proud to be able to contribute to combatting the coronavirus while
creating value for clients and society through this innovation. Offering innovative packaging
solutions for e-commerce consolidates paper’s leading role in this segment and reinforces our
vocation for creating a more sustainable future,” said Francisco Razzolini, director of Industrial
Technology, Innovation, Sustainability and Projects at Klabin.

ABOUT SENAI CETIQT
The Chemical and Textile Industry Technology Center (SENAI CETIQT) is formed by the SENAI
CETIQT College, the SENAI Innovation Institute for Biosynthetics and Fibers and the SENAI
Institute for Textile and Apparel Technology. Inaugurated in 1949, it is one of the biggest
centers for generating knowledge in the chemical, textile and apparel production chain, which
are sectors that jointly employ over 11.9 million people in the country.

ABOUT SENAI INNOVATION INSTITUTES
The SENAI Innovation Institutes Network was created to meet the needs of Brazil’s industrial
sector. The network focuses on applied research, using knowledge practically, developing new
products and custom solutions for companies or ideas that generate business opportunities.
The institutes work collaboratively, forming a multidisciplinary and complementary network
with each other as well as in partnership with academia, with nationwide coverage.

The network consists of 26 SENAI Innovation Institutes. Since its creation, in 2013, over R$1.2
billion has been invested in 1,332 Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) projects. The
organization has over 930 researchers, 52% of whom hold masters or doctoral degrees.
Because they are considered Science & Technology Institutes (ICT), SENAI Innovation Institutes
enjoy access to various non-reimbursable funding sources for RD&I projects. Currently, 15
institutes are part of EMBRAPII units and have direct access to funds for financing strategic
research and innovation projects.
