Klabin announces maintenance shutdown at Puma Unit
Shutdown will be between February 7 and 18, and will follow all health and COVID-19 protocols
Paraná, February 2, 2022 – Klabin will carry out the 2022 maintenance shutdown at the Puma Unit in Ortigueira, Paraná, starting from February 7. This important event complies with the sector’s mandatory Regulatory Norms (NR) and is designed to ensure the proper functioning of equipment at the Unit, besides implementing improvements that enhance the quality of the company's production process and increase employee safety.
To preserve the health of professionals and the community during this pandemic, Klabin has established strict safety protocols, such as physical distancing, mandatory use of masks, washing of hands, measurement of temperature at the entrance to the Unit and monitoring of possible symptoms.
All contractors must show proof of complete vaccination against COVID-19 and will undergo tests in the city of origin before traveling to the Unit. The exam will be repeated during a screening process before accessing the mill and will include contractors from the region as well. To ensure greater safety throughout the operation, the Company has set up a third restaurant at the Unit for outsourced maintenance shutdown professionals, while the company's employees and the Puma II Project team will continue to use their usual spaces during this period.
To avoid overburdening the region's health system, the company has also partnered with a private hospital in Telêmaco Borba, which will assist employees who need medical care.
Other successful actions in previous maintenance shutdowns will continue, including the use of an automatic system consisting of automatic, quick and reliable sensors to measure temperature at the mill entrance, which prevents people from getting close to each other and the formation of lines -, reorganized meal times and places and adoption of remote work for administrative areas.
Maintenance downtimes are regulatory events for a few industry sectors according to Brazilian law. During these times, interventions are made that guarantee the reliability of operations and confer safety on processes and people (employees and community). The shutdown also creates an opportunity for technological improvements and upgrades to be implemented. Note that at Klabin, the stages of the maintenance shutdown are defined based on project management best practices, with the focus on safety, planning, integration and quality in the production processes at the manufacturing units.
The Maintenance Shutdown entails an increase of 5,000 new temporary jobs in the region, a significant portion of which is local manpower from the surrounding cities, thereby generating income for workers in the Campos Gerais region. This event requires logistics and infrastructure, which includes transport, accommodation, meals and other services, all of which strongly drive the economy of the cities. Moreover, tax income grows for the towns during these periods due to extra circulation at hotels and overall increase in demand for food.
