Paraná, March 20, 2019 – On Wednesday afternoon (20), upon invitation by councilman Élio Cesar Marcondes (Fubá), Klabin representatives participated in a meeting in the City Council of Telêmaco Borba on the disposal of solid waste in the city. Leaders of the Environmental Cooperative of Telêmaco Borba (COOPATB) and the Construction and Public Services secretary, João Henrique Kroll, also participated in the meeting.

At the meeting, they discussed the importance of recycling, the public’s role in separating materials and the importance of environmental education for waste management. Participants also addressed the difficulties in the city’s recycling program, which are part of the cause of the city’s low recycling rate. A key issue raised was the need to renew the operating permit for the cooperative facilities, which is used by recyclable-material collectors.

“Klabin will provide technical support to the city government to help the cooperative obtain the operating permit, which will make possible an immediate increase in the volume of material received from recyclable-material collectors,” said Júlio Nogueira, Sustainability and Environment manager at Klabin. Another important step, also led by the company, will be to implement a pilot recycling program in the neighborhoods of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro (BNH) and Jardim Bandeirantes. Under the project, Klabin will distribute reusable packaging to households and support an environmental awareness campaign to engage the public and schools.

About Klabin’s Solid Waste Program

Developed in partnership with the Caminhos do Tibagi Consortium, the program supports the management of solid waste in seven cities: Imbaú, Ortigueira, Reserva, Tamarana, Tibagi, Ventania and Telêmaco Borba. 

Since the launch of the program’s action plans, Klabin has worked to conduct diagnoses of solid waste in each city; supplied structures and equipment such as sheds, waste collection trucks and materials to structure the recycling process in each city; and worked to train collectors and to form associations or cooperatives for organizing the effort. Upcoming steps in the program include obtaining the environmental licensing to make the Consortiumed Landfill a reality and providing environmental education on recycling in municipal schools.
