Arbor Day is celebrated at the 30th edition of Caiubi Program

Santa Catarina, September 19, 2018 – Teachers of public schools in the cities of Lages, Rio Rufino, Palmeira, Bom Retiro, Urubici, São José do Cerrito and Bocaina do Sul, in Santa Catarina, received in September, when the Arbor Day is celebrated, the 30th edition of the Caiubi Program, whose main theme was soil care and its relation with the Environmental Sustainability of Ecosystems. The event, organized by Klabin, provides training to primary and secondary school teachers.

This edition, held on September 12 and 13, received around 60 teachers at the Correia Pinto auditorium. Letícia Sequinatto and Osmar Klauberg Filho, professors with doctorate in soil from the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC), gave lectures and held workshops on the theme. Other lectures, play activities and field visits were conducted by Klabin together with partners, which enriched the event with information on environmental impacts, fauna, flora, sustainability and forest management. Topics addressed in the event include: Sustainable Forest Plantations and Environmental Management System (Klabin), Matas Legais Program (Apremavi), Demystifying Fauna (Sumatra) and Environmental Protectors (Environmental Police).

“The purpose of the project is to reinforce teachers’ awareness of sustainability issues in order to form multipliers of this knowledge among students and communities, developing projects that also contribute to the school curriculum,” said Mireli Pitz, PhD in vegetable production and a biologist at Klabin.

The Caiubi Program

To disseminate the concepts of ecological awareness among teachers in the communities where it operates, Klabin launched the Caiubi Program in Paraná in 2001. In Santa Catarina, the project was launched in 2007 and is held in partnership with the Departments of Education. Since its conception, the program has seen 29 editions and benefitted nearly 1,296 teachers at 481 schools and 166,287 students[AB1] .
