Projeto Puma II

Klabin starts operations at the Container Rail Terminal in Paraná

The railroad project, rolled out in partnership with Brado Logística and TCP, received investments of over R$300 million and will double the Company's container transportation capacity in Paraná

Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of paper for packaging and paper packaging, started operations at the Container Rail Terminal in Paraná on September 15. The project goes live as the world’s largest transporter in terms of volume for a single company, with the capacity to transport 125 thousand tons of pulp and paper in containers per month from the Puma unit in Ortigueira and the Monte Alegre unit in Telêmaco Borba to the Port of Paranaguá, all in the state of Paraná. Moreover, its potential for distribution using the railroad network reduces traffic on highways, thereby increasing the company’s operational efficiency in Paraná and contributing to sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions.

The project was designed based on the branch line laid at the Puma Unit, inaugurated in 2016 and until then the largest private investment in the history of Paraná (R$8.5 billion), which doubled Klabin's production capacity in three years. In 2021, with fresh investments of R$12.9 billion in the Puma II Project, the Company is acquiring four more locomotives and 460 wagons to transport the additional volume produced by the new mill. To put the rolling stock into operation, the branch line was expanded and a trench was constructed on the PR-340 highway connecting Telêmaco Borba and Ortigueira to transport both pulp and paper by railroad. The terminal was built adjacent to the Ortigueira mill and will centralize the export-bound shipments from the Monte Alegre and Puma units, which will be routed to the Port of Paranaguá.

With a storage capacity of 2,000 containers, this yard houses two new internal railroad lines. In addition, investments were made on state-of-the-art terminals, including four Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes, which are used in the port equipment and furniture sectors to transport heavy and complex cargo and are 70% more efficient than other equipment. This new equipment will replace the use of fossil fuels and its automation system, which regulates the operator’s maneuvers, ensures greater employee safety.

The terminal helps drive the development of logistics infrastructure across Brazil as it diversifies and enables the use of other modes – apart from road transport – to transport cargo, which makes the process simpler. It also increases road safety, reduces the Company's logistics costs in Paraná by 25% and, by preventing the emission of over 15,000 tons of CO2 - the equivalent of emissions by 2,692 cars - is in alignment with Klabin’s Sustainable Development Goals (KODS) defined based on the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (UN).

“This Terminal is part of a major logistics solution planned to sustain the Company's new expansion cycle in Paraná. This consolidated operation will be one of the world’s biggest logistics operations. The Klabin Container Terminal offers an end-to-end multimodal solution and strengthens Klabin's commitment to pursuing initiatives that promote sustainable development in line with its ESG goals, while benefiting the communities where we operate,” says Sandro Ávila, Director of Operational Planning, Logistics, Supplies and IT.

The project was developed in partnership with Klabin’s strategic partners with tremendous expertise in logistics - Brado Logística and TCP (Paranaguá Container Terminal), which also operates the Terminal.
