São Paulo, November 13, 2019 – Klabin ranked first among Pulp and Paper companies in the Exame Sustainability Guide 2019 edition. The award is a recognition of the sustainable development initiatives that the company employs in all the areas of operation, in line with its Sustainability Policy. Klabin has been present in the guide since 2013, having been elected “Sustainable Company of the Year” in 2016 and the most sustainable in the industry in 2016 and 2017.
The consolidation of the robust environmental management model has been contributing to operational and process improvements in the company, which reflected in significant results in 2018, most notably the increase in the share of renewable sources in Klabin’s energy matrix, the reduction in total water consumption and total CO2 emissions.
Currently, the company’s energy matrix is composed 89.1% of renewable sources generated from forest-based products. According to 2018 data, its forestry base removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than is emitted by all of its industrial units, with a positive balance of 5.1 million tons of CO2 equivalent.
Last year, the company also reduced total water intake by 3% and total wastewater discharged into surface waters by 9%. Also worth mention is that during this period, the total water recycled and reused was twice as much as total water collected.
In its 21st edition, the Exame Sustainability Guide is published by Exame Magazine to honor companies for best sustainability practices. Issues such as sustainability governance, human rights, community relations, supplier management, water management, biodiversity management, waste management, climate change, customer relations and ethics and transparency are also evaluated by the guide.
