Klabin starts operations in Horizonte, Ceará

Ceará, February 13, 2020 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest packaging paper producer and exporter and the leading producer of corrugated board packaging and industrial sacks, began production of corrugated board packaging at its new industrial unit located in Horizonte, Ceará. The first order, which was delivered in January, marks the company’s startup of operations in the state.

Klabin acquired the mill in September to expand its production in the region, anticipating the growing fruit industry in the Northeast region of Brazil. The expectation is to create 240 direct and indirect jobs, of which the company already has filled 10%. The capital expenditure announced for the Unit was R$100 million, of which R$48 million has already been invested.

“The region’s vocation as a major fruit exporter has been growing, while industrial operations are expanding as well. This investment strengthens our partnership with clients in the North and Northeast regions and gives us competitive advantages in these markets. We are very pleased to be expanding our presence in the region. Entering the state of Ceará and putting Klabin in the region represented by our people, with their knowledge, dedication, technology and sustainability, shows that we go beyond just supplying packaging,” said Douglas Dalmasi, Packaging officer at Klabin.

Located 35 kilometers from Fortaleza and 90 kilometers from the Port of Pecém, the mill will receive recycled paper from Goiana Unit, which is located in Pernambuco, and virgin fiber from the Klabin units located in Paraná and Santa Catarina, making it ready to serve the industry in Ceará and the region.

The corrugated board packaging, like Klabin’s other paper and packaging lines, is made from the company’s own certified pulp extracted from planted forests, i.e., from sustainable and renewable sources, and also is fully recyclable.
