Klabin CEO Cristiano Teixeira sounds warning at official COP-26 event on importance of mobilizing public and private financing to help emerging markets and developing economies with their climate transition
Glasgow, November 5, 2021 – The Chief Executive Officer of Klabin, Cristiano Teixeira, discussed on Wednesday afternoon, during the panel ‘Delivering Finance for Developing and Emerging Markets,’ which is part of the official COP-26 program, the importance of helping small and midsized companies and entrepreneurs during the current economic recovery, especially with supporting them to ensure their active participate in the climate transition.
According to Teixeira, we must monitor how risks are priced by banks and financial institutions, as well as the inflation impact on businesses, as opportunities emerge to develop greener economic incentive mechanisms to ensure that emerging markets are able to finance efforts to combat and mitigate climate change, especially through adaptation mechanisms. “At Klabin, for example, our main energy source is biomass. We must find ways to ensure that small and midsized companies and entrepreneurs also migrate towards this new reality. However, we will need to be creative in order to develop adequate financing structures to support investments in the required technological innovations. Large companies already have access to these instruments," he said.
The discussion, which occurred on Finance Day, was mediated by economist, author and former Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, with the participation of Shemara Wikramanayake, CEO of the Australia-based Macquarie Bank; Jonh Johnson, CEO of Danish pension fund manager PKA; Maheen Rahman, CEO of the Pakistani infrastructure company Zamin PKT; Leila Fourie, CEO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange; as well as the CEO of Klabin. The meeting also featured an intervention by U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who reinforced the important of the debate, which for the first time enjoyed the participation of a representative of the U.S. Treasury Department.
