Klabin and UN Global Compact Network Brazil launch ImPacto NetZero

Movement invites companies to evaluate adopting science-based targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions

São Paulo, June 10, 2021 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of paper for packaging solutions and paper packaging, has partnered with the UN Global Compact Network Brazil to launch ImPacto NetZero. The movement, which arose due to the urgent need for collective mobilization to mitigate climate change, invites companies to evaluate the adoption of science-based targets for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and society to engage in the cause for ensuring a more sustainable planet.

ImPacto NetZero emerges at an important moment. According to data from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), carbon levels in the air set a new record in May 2021, of 419 parts per million. The movement encourages the private sector to adopt the Science-Based Targets (SBTi) initiative, which is a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The partnership offers methodological support for companies of all sizes for setting GHG emissions reduction targets that are aligned with the recommendations of science for achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement for limiting the increase in the global temperature to significantly below 2°C and doing everything possible to keep it at 1.5 °C.

“Klabin, whose targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions were approved by the SBTi, is fully engaged in sharing this experience with other companies. We believe that demonstrating the benefits of making sustainability an essential part of business strategies will mobilize more companies in this cause and help make a difference in the sustainable future that we all want for the planet. That is one of the functions of the ImPacto NetZero movement,” explained Cristiano Teixeira, CEO of Klabin.

“The Global Compact Network Brazil has been reinforcing the need for companies to establish science-based commitments for achieving zero net carbon emissions and to collaborate towards achieving the targets of the Paris Agreement. This is the only way to protect the planet from the catastrophic effects of climate change, to conserve biodiversity and to ensure a sustainable and financially healthy economy. The ImPacto NetZero movement plays a key role in engaging more companies and people on this journey,” said Carlo Pereira, Executive Director of the Global Compact Network Brazil.
