Curitiba, November 9, 2015 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest paper producer and exporter, received last Friday (November 6), the Paraná Climate Seal in the gold category, which recognizes companies that formulate and publish inventories of their greenhouse gas emissions. The seal, launched by the State Department of Environment and Water Resources together with the Federation of Industries of Paraná (FIEP) is a public registry that companies operating in the state of Paraná can voluntarily join.

“It is an honor for Klabin to be one of the first companies to have its Greenhouse Gas inventory voluntarily registered in the Paraná Climate Seal Program. It makes me even happier to have received the gold seal. In 2014, Klabin achieved a score of 86.5% in the use of renewable sources to generate energy, and the replacement of fuel oil with biomass also enabled its plants to drastically reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 61% in 8 years. And we are committed to reducing them further every year,” said Julio Cesar Batista Nogueira, Corporate Environment Manager at Klabin.

The initiative, launched six months ago by the State Department of Environment and Water Resources, aims to encourage the culture of formulating and publishing corporate inventories of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Companies can voluntarily join the program and the seal has three categories: bronze, silver and gold.

The Gold Seal was given to companies whose inventories were verified by professionals or companies accredited by Brazil’s National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro). The Silver Seal is given to companies whose inventories were verified by licensed professionals or companies. The Bronze Seal was given to companies that joined the Public Registry. The inventories show the gases emitted by companies and the respective volumes. With this Public Registry, the State Department of Environment expects to map out the most polluting industries to take decisions regarding mitigating efforts.

The event was held at the headquarters of Fiep in Curitiba and was attended by the State Secretary of Environment, Ricardo Soavinski, the president of Fiep, Edson Luiz Campanholo, the president of the Environmental Institute of Paraná (IAP), Tarcísio Mossato Pinto, the Corporate Environment Manager of Klabin, Julio Cesar Batista Nogueira, and representatives from participating companies.
