With support from Klabin programs, forest producers in Santa Catarina receive recognition for forest stewardship certification
Santa Catarina, October 8, 2019 – With support from Klabin, a group of forest producers from Planalto Serrano were recognized by the 1st Audit for Forest Stewardship Certification – FSC® (FSC-C001941) in the region. The action is part of Klabin’s Forest Certification of Suppliers of Controlled Wood Program in Santa Catarina, with support from SUMATRA (environmental advisory) and the Legal Woods Program and in partnership with the Association for the Preservation of Environment and Life (Apremavi).
This is the first batch trained on the Forest Certification Program supported by Klabin in Santa Catarina, whose forest areas span over six cities in the Serra Catarinense region (Lages, Painel, São José do Cerrito, São Cristóvão do Sul Correia Pinto and Capão Alto), totaling around 2,500 hectares of planted and native forests. The project, launched over five years ago for Klabin’s wood suppliers, has already helped to independently certify more than 21,000 hectares of planted (pine/eucalyptus) and native forests distributed across more than 15 cities in the Atlantic Forest region.
Klabin follows the principles of FSC® for the Chain of Custody while sourcing controlled wood. As such, the established rules tend to prepare owners of planted forests in the region for Forest Stewardship Certification in the future.
