Klabin participates in Portuguese festival in Santa Catarina

Santa Catarina, October 7, 2019 – Klabin will be present at “Marejada,” a Portuguese party considered Brazil’s largest fish festival, organized in the city of Itajaí, Santa Catarina, between October 8 and 20. To make the event sustainable, the company will donate paper plates, wooden cutlery and trash cans made of corrugated board. The recyclable materials were produced from renewable natural resources and raw material originating from certified and planted forests.

The event venue was fully equipped with drinking fountains to offer visitors free filtered water. With these initiatives, Marejada will be the first entertainment event in Santa Catarina to avoid the use of single-use plastic, thereby reinforcing the importance of sustainability and recycling. This measure is expected to avert the disposal of 900,000 plastic cups, reaffirming the city’s commitment to the environment through a protocol signed with the United Nations (UN) during the “Volvo Ocean Race” event in 2018 and reinforced by Klabin’s support.

The festival, to be held at Centreventos Itajaí, will feature more than 100 regional presentations and music shows, not to mention gastronomy, represented by dishes prepared from different fish species and craft beer tasting sessions. Entry is free. The event will also include the 1st Kids Sustainability Forum, which includes visits to public schools in the Itajaí region between October 14 and 16 to raise awareness among kids about sustainability. The Forum is expected to reach out to approximately 1,000 children from 2nd to 5th grades.
