Klabin and Municipal Government of Goiana inaugurate Campaign Hospital

Pernambuco, July 6, 2020 – The result of joint efforts by the public and private sectors, Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper, and the Municipal Government of Goiana (PE) today inaugurated a Campaign Hospital in the city to treat patients infected by the new coronavirus. The hospital will be equipped with five ICU and 35 infirmary beds, increasing the city’s existing treatment capacity.

The event was held today and was attended by representatives from the Municipal Government of Goiana and Klabin, and followed all the safety and hygiene protocols required in connection with the pandemic. The Company donated all the necessary equipment to assemble the beds and thousands of hospital and personal protection items to enable the Campaign Hospital to start operating.

“We are very pleased to help Goiana with more resources to combat the pandemic. In a delicate moment such as this, we have underlined our responsibility as a corporate citizen and have increasingly reached out to society to help it combat the coronavirus”, said Marney Tenório Buenos Ayres, industrial manager at Klabin.

“It is with tremendous joy and responsibility that we established this partnership with Klabin. We are opening a very important health unit for the people of Goiana, which will reduce the distance to getting medical care in the state capital and help with health actions for people in our town. We are grateful for all this support from the Company, which is so opportune during this difficult moment for our city,” said Eduardo Honório, interim Mayor of Goiana.

The company has already donated more than R$1 million to initiatives in the state of Pernambuco. The actions are focused on the areas of health and welfare, which include support to sectors affected by the crisis, and prioritize Goiana, where the company has operations. The donations include equipment and thousands of hygiene and personal protection items delivered to the Hospital Belarmino Correia, 12,000 corrugated board packaging used to transport food, hygiene and cleaning items, and hundreds of basic food baskets to underprivileged communities. Klabin has also been closely monitoring the situation of collectors of recyclable materials, whose income declined due to the pandemic. It provided assistance to the Brazilian Association of Recyclable-Material Collectors (ANCAT), which provides meal cards to professionals all over the state and, through a partnership with the NGO “Pimp My Carroça”, it donated masks produced by the Contagiando Sorrisos Project to them.
