Caiubi Program discusses solid waste and recycling with 14,000 local students
Paraná, February 6, 2019 – The mission to share knowledge about the correct disposal of solid waste and to develop environmental awareness still during childhood reached 14,000 students from municipal schools in seven cities across Paraná, visited by the Caiubi Program in 2018. Caiubi is a Klabin initiative that trains teachers to disseminate the concepts of ecology and sustainability, and also contributes to educating students.
In a special edition, the program, which has been implemented in Telêmaco Borba for 18 years, applied its methodology in the cities of Ortigueira, Imbaú, Reserva, Tamarana, Tibagi and Ventania, combining theory and practice about the management and disposal of solid waste.
Over 280 education professionals, including teachers and academic coordinators, attended two training sessions with specialists and gained knowledge to address the topic in the classroom.
Diversity of activities
Each professional was given the challenge of developing specific assignments with their classes, which were showcased at environmental exhibitions held at the schools in the second semester. Families of students and local residents attended the events and learned about the subject.
Moreover, during the year, teachers and students visited the recycling centers in their cities, played educational games with recycled materials, cultivated gardens at schools, watched the play “Captain Coleta e os amigos da Klabin” and received informative comic books. These activities enabled students to expand their knowledge in a fun and simple way.
“The Caiubi Program actively addressed a topic that is essential for cities, which is the proper disposal of solid waste. It is important that new generations recognize the importance of this subject and know that recycling can generate income for communities, besides improving the quality of life of many people. This effort is aligned with our Sustainability Policy and with the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” said Júlio Nogueira, Sustainability and Environment manager at Klabin.

Klabin also maintains an Ecological Park in the Monte Alegre Farm in Telêmaco Borba for research and conservation purposes, which provides shelter and rehabilitates wild animals that are the victims of accidents or abuse, thus supporting the efforts of environmental authorities. It also helps to preserve the region’s flora and fauna, including endangered species.
Klabin’s management is entirely guided by Sustainable Development. Klabin has implemented most of its social and environmental programs in the Campos Gerais region, notably Social Forests – Planning Sustainable Properties, Legal Forests, Solid Waste Project, Growing Up Reading, Caiubi Program, Força Verde Mirim and Environmental Protectors.
