Klabin publishes Public Summary 2021 of its Forest Stewardship Plan for Santa Catarina

The document compiles the company’s ongoing initiatives to foster sustainable development and protect fauna and flora

Santa Catarina, June 30, 2021 — The Public Summary 2021 of Klabin’s Forest Stewardship Plan in Santa Catarina is already available for consultation on the website of the company, which is Brazil’s largest producer of packaging paper. The document reports on the company’s efforts in the proper stewardship of its forests and on its social and sustainability policies, while also highlighting actions under its commitment to respect nature, employees and partners and the general public.

In Santa Catarina, Klabin manages approximately 140,000 hectares that extend into 39 of the state’s municipalities, which is known as the Lages Social & Economic Development Area. Demonstrating Klabin’s commitment to the environment, over 50% of the area it manages in the region has been designated for environmental conservation, while around 44% represents planted forests.

Publication of the Public Summary 2021 provides access to key information on Klabin’s operations in the region, including its Sustainability Policy, descriptions of operating processes, environmental, social and economic indicators, accompaniment of forest stewardship in watersheds, environmental protection actions and data on biodiversity conservations obtained by monitoring of regional fauna and flora. To measure the importance of this work, Klabin registers data on the conservation of 872 species of native flora and 525 species of fauna. Of this total, 212 plant species and 411 animal species have their conservation status recognized on official lists of endangered species.

The document also presents the results of Klabin’s forest stewardship actions involving mosaic planting models, which combines stands of protected native forests with planted forests. The system helps to protect natural resources, improve the potential production of forests and conserve biodiversity by creating ecological corridors that facilitate the movement of hundreds of wildlife species. Klabin’s social and environmental actions, such as the Caiubi, Growing Up Reading, Forestry Certification of Timber Suppliers, Social Forests and Legal Forests programs, also have their results presented in the document.

Also through the Public Summary 2021, Klabin reinforces its long-term commitment to uphold the principles and criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC), a certification that was granted to the Klabin Forestry Unit in Santa Catarina in 2004. The initiative also works to promote the environmental conservation and sustainable development of forests around the world and to ensure that Klabin’s planted forests adopt best social, environmental and economic practices.
