Klabin’s Puma Unit hosts Annual Meeting of Recovery and Power Boiler Operators

Paraná, December 5, 2017 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest paper producer and exporter, the only company in the country to offer solutions in hardwood, softwood and fluff pulp, and the leader in corrugated board packaging and industrial bags markets, hosted on November 29 and 30 the 14th Recovery Boiler Operators Meeting and the 1st Power Boiler Operators Meeting, organized by the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Technical Association (ABTCP).Held at the Puma Unit, Klabin’s pulp mill that was inaugurated in the city of Ortigueira in Paraná last year, the event sought to foster the exchange of information among operators and showcase the latest technological innovations in recovery and power boilers, which burn the black liquor derived from the wood pulp cooking process and the biomass generated during the preparation of woodchips at the Wood Yard, respectively.

 

During the two-day event, activities related to the meetings were held in parallel.The recovery boiler operators discussed issues such as leaks and replacement of smelt spouts, a case study on the benefits of reducing viscosity in the processing and burning of black liquor, and best practices in the application and chemical control of water treatment in such boilers.They also discussed issues such as cleaning strategies using highly efficient flushing jets and systems for the treatment of ash from the recovery boiler at the Puma Unit, among others.

 

Power boiler operators also participated in discussions and lectures on issues inherent to their area, such as reducing clogs in power boiler biomass feeding system, maximizing boiler performance, contingency procedures in case of water contamination, increasing the reliability of the feeding water system for boilers, as well as a roundtable to discuss the issues covered during the day.

 

Also as part of the event, which is held once a year in pulp and paper companies, a get-together was held for the participants to celebrate the success of the meeting and the knowledge shared among professionals. On December 1, in the morning, Klabin took the participants on a visit to the Monte Alegre Unit in Telêmaco Borba, Paraná, which produces kraftliner and paperboard for packaging.
