COVID

Klabin requires tests for COVID-19 in the city of origin of Puma II employees

Protocol also includes one-week quarantine and another test before employees can return to the construction site

Tests for COVID-19 in the city of origin, seven-day quarantine and a fresh test before clearance for resuming professional activities, daily measurement of employees’ temperature, ozone tunnel at the entry and exit points of construction sites for cleaning external surfaces (clothing, shoes, bags and personnel protective equipment). These are just a few examples of the preventive measures being adopted by Klabin to ensure the health and safety of Puma II Project workers and the general population of the cities in our region.

The health and safety protocol adopted by the company also applies to dormitories where the workers stay, cafeterias and the means of transport (buses and vans). Moreover, the Company is running an extensive communication campaign to disseminate the preventive measures against the new coronavirus, which includes an exclusive radio station for the project and WhatsApp messages.

Currently around 80% of the workers at the Puma II Project come from Paraná, 60% of them from Ortigueira, Telêmaco Borba and Imbaú and 20% from other cities in the state. Only 20% of the workers come from other states. The project works were suspended on March 23 at the start of the pandemic, when the Company put the workers on paid leave due to the lack of clear guidelines on measures to prevent and combat the spread of the virus. However, when the state and municipal governments implemented the protocols, project works resumed gradually on April 16 using only workers living in the region. Since then, workers from other regions have been mobilized gradually, always in line with the Intersector Committee on Combatting COVID-19, consisting of the Health Department of Telêmaco Borba, the 21st Healthcare Region, Klabin, Moura and Instituto Dr. Feitosa hospitals, and the Municipal Government of Ortigueira. The continuity of operations is established in the state and municipal decrees of Ortigueira and Telêmaco Borba, which understand that ‘industrial and construction sectors’ are essential businesses.

Isolation and testing of workers

For those coming from other regions, isolation and testing for COVID-19 are mandatory. The protocol establishes that these workers be tested in their place of origin before traveling. After reaching their destination, they must be in quarantine for seven days after which they are tested once again before returning to work. These measures are aimed at ensuring that workers are not infected.
During the quarantine period, workers receive assistance from Klabin and the project contractors, as well as guidelines from health teams. Moreover, everyone remains under observation and if any employee shows any symptom of flu or respiratory disease, they are sent to quarantine and their health condition is monitored daily. People they might have had contact with are also mapped and quarantined.
Physical distancing and use of masks increase protection during transport
Klabin and the contractors distributed safety masks to all employees. Use of masks is mandatory in the Project, both at the construction site and the offices.
Buses and vans for workers are traveling with only half their normal capacity, which enables physical distancing. All vehicles have hand sanitizer and appropriate ventilation. Moreover, the use of masks is mandatory for drivers and passengers, and vans and buses are cleaned daily between trips, which also include foot bath for shoes.

At the entrance points to the Puma II Project, turnstiles and service rooms are cleaned periodically and workers respect the distancing signage and guidelines. Everyone entering the gates has their temperature measured through thermal cameras or electronic thermometers. As an extra health and safety protocol measure, at the start and end of the work shift, workers pass through an ozone tunnel to disinfect external surfaces, such as clothes, bags and shoes.
Individual meals

At the cafeteria in the construction site, meals are packed individually. At the entrance, workers are advised to wash their hands and maintain a distance of 1.5 meters while waiting in line. Lunch hours were increased and each cafeteria receives only half of its capacity. During lunch time, adhesives on tables indicate where to sit and ensure compliance with distancing rules.
