Company joins IPT Open Experience, the collaborative innovation program of the Institute for Technological Research (IPT)
 

São Paulo, June 2, 2021 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper, has taken another important step in its innovation strategy by joining IPT Open Experience, a high impact business hub focused on hard tech innovation projects. The Open Innovation concept is related to collaborative innovation in which industries, governments, research institutions and others come together to jointly develop new technologies and processes.

We believe in collaborative work and technology as the paths for a more sustainable future,” says Francisco Razzolini, director of Industrial Technology, Innovation, Sustainability and Projects at Klabin.
 

By participating in the initiative, Klabin expects to strengthen its relations with IPT, as well as with startups, companies, investors, government, research centers and universities that are partners in the initiative. The first joint action will be the construction of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center that will focus on increasing the productivity of Brazilian industry with the involvement of startups.  The Center will receive funds from the São Paulo State Research Foundation (Fapesp) and six other companies, including Klabin. The goal is to equip the domestic production sector with modern tools, as well as develop and provide AI applications that will contribute to the implementation and consolidation of Industry 4.0 in Brazil. 
 

“The first avenue for companies to participate in the IPT Open Experience is through an Innovation Center, by which each partner company can set up its own center for applied research in diverse areas,” says Jefferson Gomes, chairman of IPT. The second avenue is the Innovation Hub, an environment created to solve technological challenges, as well as develop and incorporate hard tech innovation in companies’ businesses through interaction with startups, researchers, universities, government agencies and other players in the domestic science, technology and innovation ecosystem, accompanied by a reduction in costs and the time for open innovation.
 

Innovation is the engine for the future

Innovation has been in the DNA of Klabin since its foundation 120 years ago. The Company pursues in science and technology the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve an increasingly sustainable future. Overall, the company has five Research & Development avenues: development of forestry base, development of pulp, paper line, new forest base technologies and reduction of environmental impacts. 
 

Klabin’s main innovation strategy is to streamline its practices and processes in order to develop superior, more competitive and biodegradable products while reducing its operating costs. For this, it relies on a team of researchers with master’s and doctorate degrees, who seek every day the most innovative solutions in the sector.
 

Klabin also has a team of researchers divided into two spaces focused on research to improve the production chain. The Forestry Research Center in Telêmaco Borba, Paraná, is dedicated to studies on the universe of the forest chain, which includes genetic enhancement, wood quality, soil and climate study, genetic adaptation, pest control and biotechnology. The mission of the Technology Center, also located in Telêmaco Borba, is to improve the quality of products, while anticipating trends and developing new technologies and sustainable applications. Professionals are dedicated to increasing the efficient use of raw materials consumed in order to minimize the impacts on the environment.
