Klabin supports UNICEF in action to combat COVID-19 in municipal schools in Manaus and Goiana

Initiative works to ensure safer schools for students as on-site classes resume

Committed to helping the public surmount the Covid-19 pandemic, Klabin has joined forces with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to install 32 hand-washing stations and/or hand sanitizer totems in public school and charitable organizations in the cities of Manaus, Amazonas and Goiana, Pernambuco. The initiative also includes a campaign to raise awareness on the importance of properly washing hands targeting teachers, students and their families, as well as local residents.

In all, 11 training courses on health protocols were held for professionals from the public system comprising 83 schools (44 in Goiana and 39 in Manaus). Also provided were informational leaflets and posters on how to prevent and control Covid-19 with instructions on hand washing, mask use and menstrual health to ensure the safe reopening of schools and everyone’s health.

“The pandemic still demands that we all redouble efforts when washing hands, wearing masks and physical distancing. The action with UNICEF symbolizes our commitment to the communities where we operate. We are a corporate citizen and believe that every attitude counts when it comes to helping all Brazilians weather these challenging times,” said Ana Cristina Barcellos Rodrigues, Klabin’s People & Corporate Services director.

The installation of handwashing stations and/or hand sanitizer totems was completed in July, which will support the structure enabling each city to reopen their schools.

Support throughout the pandemic
Klabin’s commitment to society was reflected in various actions that it has carried out to support the efforts to contain the pandemic throughout Brazil. Since March 2020, Klabin has engaged in social actions and made donations in various areas to support local communities. Around R$34 million has been allocated to actions focusing on health, welfare and income generation.

In addition to the actions with UNICEF, Klabin’s investments include its participation in a pool of companies that donated 3.4 million in medicines brought from China, the so-called “intubation kits,” in early April. The medicines, which are certified by both Anvisa and Chinese health authorities, were donated in full to the Brazilian government, which was responsible for distributing them to the various states through the National Health System (SUS).

The Company also has donated over R$1.2 million to combat Covid-19 in Amazonas for actions focusing on public health and welfare. In Goiana, the Company helped set up a Field Hospital to care for Covid-19 patients with the capacity to provide ICU and infirmary healthcare.
