Klabin develops technology to print braille in corrugated board packaging

Exclusive solution was approved by the Brazilian Association for Assistance to People with Visual Impairment and is already available in the market

São Paulo, November 25, 2021 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of paper for packaging and paper packing, announces the development of a pioneering technology to print in braille (a tactile writing system used by people with visual impairment) in corrugated paper packaging, an important social milestone for the market. The batch produced using this solution was approved by the Brazilian Association for Assistance to People with Visual Impairment (LARAMARA).

The Company, whose operations are guided by innovation, identified the opportunity to launch the project focused on social inclusion, that is, the possibility of printing in braille on corrugated board packaging. For this, Klabin sought the assistance of a company specializing in die cut laser knives used to produce the dies for marking points that help the blind or people with low vision to read and which met the technical requirements and standards.

“We believe that embossing the braille system in corrugated board packaging reflects our commitment to contributing to a fairer and more egalitarian society. We know the potential of the solution to include people with visual impairment and are proud to offer this possibility to the market,” says Luiz Carlos Walendowsky, New Business and Corrugated Board Products manager at Klabin.

The braille embossing technology is available at the Tijuco Preto (Jundiaí – SP) and Goiana (PE) units. Walendowsky also stated that Klabin is launching pilot tests and gradually ramping up production of this solution, which will mainly benefit the cartridges and e-commerce segments. “With a few exceptions, braille becomes more important in packaging that reaches the end consumer. We know that the virtual market is increasingly heating up and this is an important milestone for us to make social progress in this niche,” he concluded.
